245 70 R19.5s on W350

Postby stillsmokin » Tue Feb 21, 2017 9:27 am

I was wondering if anyone here has gone to 19.5 tires. I would like to get my rpm down on the interstate. I already have an NV4500 waiting to go in for the slightly taller overdrive ratio. The tires I'm considering are Cooper RM253 which have a tread that is usable in the mud. One place the are listed as 12 ply the other as 14. I'd probably stay with steel GM 19.5 wheels with simulators since they are available to me. Alcoa's would be nice to reduce unsprung weight, but I doubt they're made in that configuration. The cast wheel options are out since I might get looked at by the DOT at some point.

My main concern is front fender clearance with a 33" tall tire and not giving up much of the already rough ride. I mostly use the truck to haul a gooseneck and might put 5,000 miles on it a year. I figured out I'd drop down to 1900ish rpm at 75 mph with the tire an transmission change.

Yeah, alot of the Frito Lay P30 vans had 8x6.5 19.5" duals. Been looking to do a similar swap on my W350 as well, just haven't found a set of wheels

I would run away from those wheel adapters.
I'm sure a carrier enforcement officer would have a field day with those 8 to 10 lug adapters and in my state they can pull over non commercial trucks. 2 sets of lugs to come loose!

The GM P30 type wheels are the only safe choice.

I'll keep my eye out Matthew. I've came across a couple Frito Lay vans but never paid attention to the wheels.

Jeff, American Force makes a 8 on 6.5 19.5" wheel that is the classic Alcoa style. They are pretty spendy, but they are forged.

I had a set of those wheels 6 or 7 years ago. I couldn't hardly give the darn things away! I was going to put them on my truck but they were too tall to fit under the bad. I finally sold them to a guy who pulled boats from the water and wanted the duals and the load capacity of 19.5s.

I might be able to swing the American force wheels, but if I do that I need to do a rear hub swap so all the wheels are GM hub piloted. I think this needs to happen no matter what.

I'm thinking I can swipe the brakes hubs and axle shafts from a 77-87 GM K30 pickup Dana 70hd. Then all the pilots are the same, rear brakes are bigger and they have a safer design parking brake. Should be a bolt on and I've already found 2 70hds from the correct application for next to nothing that are already pulled.

What's the benefit of GM hub piloted versus what we have now? Wouldn't the GM Dana 70HD still have the same diameter hub like the Dodge already has, so other than 9/16" studs the hubs would be the same, and you'd still have to machine the center bore?
At least I always though Dana axles, no matter GM, Ford or Dodge, were the same, in relation to hub size

The pilots are all different GM being the smaller size. For some F'ed up reason dodge used the GM sized pilot on the front of the W350 dually. So on the rear they are the larger dodge pilot hub centric, the front wheels are centered by a procedure with 2 tapered nuts and then the regular nuts are installed. So really nothing is actually holding the wheel centered. People have had wheels come loose and fall off. I can't imagine the amount of extra time you'd spend screwing around with centering that wheel on the side of the road in the dark. They should have been recalled, poor poor judgment in safety by Dana and Chrysler.

Every other dually pickup I've owned the wheels are hub centered all the way around.

Ah ok. I wasn't aware the wheel centering procedure was front only, I thought it was mandatory all the way around.
It does suck on the side of the road. I keep 2 acorn nuts and the tools to use them along with the tools needed for the flanged nuts in the truck at all times. Learned that the hard way

Found these today, if you prefer steel wheels. There designed for dually trailers, but have a crazy high load rating, and are designed for 5/8" studs, hub piloted, and 245/70/19.5 tires
