Busted dually 70, '04 11.5" aam swap

Long story short, my drw d70 rear is toast and I have a srw d70 at the house so I'm wondering...

Can I put the drw drums and hubs on the srw housing with the srw axles and run it temporarily while I rebuild the drw's diff?

I know the wheel bearings are the same and the hub seals are the same but its the width that's different. Is the difference in the housings or the hubs? Will the axle shafts engage the diff with my cobbled idea of a band aid?

I don't have good srw tires and need the drw hubs to run my coined dually rims. I wouldn't do this if I had another option but I REALLY need this truck back on the road ASAP. I don't care about track width its a flatbed and I just need my damn truck 2 weeks ago...

I do not know for sure on any of this but being that the axle width is different between a SRW and DRW axle, and the drums and hubs are bigger/longer?? on a DRW compared to SRW I think you might have issues with the axle splines engaging enough.

But if the hubs are basically the same depth/length as the SRW then I would say yes swap the backing plates, drums from the DRW onto the SRW axle and then slide the SRW axles in place. The only other problem you might run into is clearance between the dually rims/tires hitting the spring packs.

Backing plates I would think are the same, but I'll know soon enough. Also I'm sure there's room for the tires to go inboard a good bit. I've got a 4hr drive home then some digging to get to the srw... we'll see where I run out of steam tonight....

Backing plates are different. The dually backing plates are offset towards the center section more. The dually axle is 8" wider than the SRW axle. The SRW axle will bolt in. You won't be able to use the duals. Use SRW rims. The inner dual will hit the springs long before it hits the hub surface.

Yeah I measured the drw as 7.5" wider at wms width, roughly equally longer at backing plate flanges. So much for that one.....

Can anyone vouch for Motive Gear ring and pinion sets? I'm looking at part no D70-354 from Summit for $230.

I have read mixed reviews of MG mostly the negatives seem to be Chevy guys saying the gears dont break in right and hum loudly about 1/3 of the time and MG always seems to blame the customer and won't warranty their parts. I have read plenty of good reviews that say their gear set works fine and the customer is happy.

Just thought I'd ask around. Other parts recommendations appreciated too including install kit.

I'm also looking at getting an 04 dually rear axle to retrofit into my truck. Besides moving perches and shock mounts is there anything else to consider with this swap? For the price this seems my best option so far so I'd really like to make it work

The only aftermarket gear I have used have been Yukon gears. I haven't had any problems with them.

Dana's are not a good axle for a beginner to learn on. They are one of the hardests to setup properly.

For better or for worse I got the 04 aam dually axle. Whole rear end with brakes cables hoses and driveshaft for $750. I plan to weld on 2.5" spring perches inboard of the original 3" ones which will of course be cut off. I'd like to have run the 3" springs too but they were sold already and would add too much fab work. Driveshaft looks like it may work by just shortening the front section and having the appropriate yoke installed to match the back of the t case. Looking for a set of 03+ 17" dually rims. Hope to also find a late model d60 front and go to a driver side drop so front wheels will match and it will already be set up for radius arms.

I ordered stock steel 17" wheels today, and scored some carbon 3/8" plate from the ironworkers at the jobsite for spring perches. I'll need a bit more but its a start. I had considered using stainless plate since thats what I normally work with. I have drops from 1/4" to 1/2" to choose from and plenty of 309 wire but using carbon and 70-s wire will be less prone to crack.

Also been thinking that I'd save money keeping my passenger drop 205 and kingpin 60. To run the 3rd/4th gen 17's I would just need to swap out for 9/16" studs of sufficient length and correct shank right? Anyone have a part number for those?
