Stay with Dana 70 or upgrade to Dana 80?

Postby woody56usmc » Wed Oct 17, 2018 6:22 pm

Hey guys,

I have an 89 W350 and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the pro's or con's of upgrading the rear axle on my 1st Gen. I'm not sure at this point how much benefit I would gain for the hassle of switching. Other than just the brakes and extra 1,000 lbs of load capacity, what other benefits are there? It will be a working truck and will tow farm equipment. I haven't had any problems in the past with the Dana 70. I do plan on increasing my horse power to about 450. I believe the Dana 70 can handle that but that it where I'm not sure. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unless you have the D80 , or can get it for cheap I would just re/re the D70 with good timken bearings and have the carrier gone through and set up properly. The cost involved, the extra work and the wider axle width are a bit a of a down side for me.

What he said.

You might need custom u-bolts and shock mounts also if you do the swap.

The 80 also has larger wheel studs.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.
