Towing mirror options?

Postby RumbleFish » Sat Jan 13, 2007 8:46 pm

So my truck has the small power mirrors on it. My pop just bought a 24x8.5 ft enclosed trailer that I am going to pull during racing season. With this combo, my mirrors show nothing but the trailer. I tried the slide on extensions, but they vibrate like a bed at the cheap motel. Finding the factory towing mirrors I'm sure will be less than impossible. Besides, I'm not real thrilled about removing my mirrors and leaving a huge hole in the door, nor do I want to just add the towing mirrors to what I already have.

Anybody have any ideas?

I had the power mirrors and swapped them out for stock towing mirrors to see around my flatbed. For that matter, they should be illegal on al duallies, period. Anyway, I have the big hole in the door, but it is getting painted this year, so I'll live with it for now. Chris Hughes (TDR dieselman359) had some slick looking aluminum inserts he installed in his doors to cover the holes. DOesnt look bad. ANother option is to find some doors with those type mirrors already installed.

Put up a classified ad, and keep an eye out. There are guys willing to trade for power mirrors all the time. You may also cinsider some 94-01 mirrors, as they will fit just fine, and to the casual observer, can look OEM.

I would not recommend the Ford- style aftermarket mirrors- they hold for about 2 years, then start to vibrate and move around on their own.

Cool... Good find man! I was going to buy a set off a newer truck and put a wing window delete in with the flip up towing mirrors on a bracket. This will be much easier...

FWIW, my truck was a D250 SRW when I bought it. I converted it to a DRW with 1 ton springs. Looks like the slide out mirror heads are the best option so far, unless I can find some kind of towing mirrors without spending too much.

mirrors

Not sure what you are looking for but Summit Racing has towing mirrors. The set I am going to get is the CIPA CIP-94000 I think you can remove the stock mirror and leave the base to cover the brackett. "Hippie" on DTR has his first gen.set up that way which is what I am going to do.

just an update, i bought and installed the mirrors i linked to above. they work great. only problem i find is its the same mirror for both sides (just flip one over) so the passenger side is now a flat piece of glass. not great for visibility :? . so i'm currently trying to remove just the glass from my stock mirror head to install in the new slide out.

go about half way down the page, part#95150 shows to fit 86-present dodge pickups and vans. also some gm products. they're easy to install, and work good. other than the flat rh glass i've had no problems. (it works fine on the rh side, just decreases range of vision due to flat mirror compared to convex)

Cajun93- that's why they invented spot mirrors. I cant live without 'em. Got 5 inchers on mine; though I think I' get 6" if I had it to do again.

I've got a 3" spot on the drivers side, and a 6" on the passenger side. I love the 6", I can see the whole side of my gooseneck! 8) I have it mounted outside the regular mirror, so it's out there. The bad thing is, I have to watch where I go, I went in a parking garage and whacked it on the wall! :x I folded the drivers in to get enough room to manuever in there! :(

nothing quite like the butt clenching sound of you mirror making contact with an unmovable object  . i guess it could be worse, could be an ubobtainable dually fender :( .

yep, i put a spot on my rh side mirror. it helps with blind spots alot. still i'm not impressed with the field of vision out of the flat piece of glass. and yes, i completly destroyed the stock mirror glass trying to remove it from the head  .

I picked up a set of those extenable mirrors also. Likewise, I'm not impressed with the flat glass on the pass. side. I also noticed that the plastic sleeve that comes with it is too thick to work with the dodge mirror bracket. That was just dandy since my pass. side likes to flop against the door

Now to find either a spot mirror or a convex mirror glass, and a solution to fix the floppy mirror syndrome.

I read that, but I want to keep some adjustability. What happens if my finance manager (fiance) drives it, or I have to move it to see around a different trailer. For me thats a last ditch effort.
