rear axle

Postby Philip » Sun Feb 24, 2008 8:54 am

If anyone has a rear axle apart or parts laying around from one. I need a tooth count on the ABS sensor ring.

Pete I know DP still has that C&C axle. But I wouldn't want him to take it apart for just a tooth count on the ABS ring. I would drop the cover off my axle before I would have someone do that.

I know someone has a axle apart. :D

I'll be waiting CK

In the later 2ng gens they changed the name from ABS ring to speed sensor ring. So I bet DP still has that part in is Dana 80.

I am doing some home work towards an Allison swap. I have to supply it a signal for output shaft RPM. I can't give it a signal from my transfer case because of my speedo being there. The only other place is the rear axle that might give me a option without some fancy machine work.

The other option is to mount some sort of tone ring on the drive shaft. :(
That isn't my prefered method.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Ever get your cab swapped? Or still doing body work?

Pete I haven't had time to do anything. Today is the first day I have had off this month. Last month I got one or two days off. I can't remember for sure. Dec. I got 2 days off xmas and the day before.

So that doesn't leave much time for anything. The wife is on 3rds now. So I can't make much noise in the garage except the days she is off.

But I have been collecting a bunch of parts.

phillip, I can check the diff I pulled out of my truck a few weeks ago. I won't be back to the shop until monday; but it's just sitting outside with no oil in it.

Sounds good GM. I could use the tooth count.

You can't run both off of the transfer case mounted speed sensor?

No the Allison is looking for a set signal per drive shaft revolution. I know the Dodge will not give the correct number of signals I need. Plus as picky as a Dodge is if I try to split the signal I wouldn't be surprised the speedo wouldn't work.

Philip, aren't you going to need the output speed before the transfer case? Low 4X4 is going to mess up your output shaft speed. I use low a fair amount hooked to the trailer, I imagine you do also especially with 3.07's.

There isn't an output shaft speed sensor on the trans?

Michael the 4x4 allisons do not have the speed sensor in the tail housings. They are mounted in the 271 cases with the rear axle providing the VSS signal.

As far as the low range question. The only time I am in low range is off road with a trailer like you said. But I do that very little now Jeremy has his AutoCar running. We haven't had to use the trucks much at all. Being off road I most likely wouldn't need anything above 1st anyway. All it would do is probably not up shift from lack of output speed.

I found the tooth count on another site its 119 teeth. :D

OK, so you need more of a VSS signal then an output shaft speed sensor. I could see conflicts of the computer seeing half the speed it knows its supposed to have, and then throwing codes and maybe not even moving. If they get there signal in another application at the output of the t-case, then everythings good.

I'll step out now..... ;)
