Try this. Push the E-Brake pedal down to a goodntight spot. Then push on the brake pedal. If its firm now, you need to adjust your auto adjusters. Your getting too much shoe travel. Just another guess. But thats a common reason for mushy or pedal to floor action. Getting rid of the abs valve was still a good thing.

Old worn-out stretchy brake hoses are very susceptible to poor pedal response.

The hoses deteriorate from inside out.

Also, some hoses will tend to suck together, making one think that the front calipers are hanging up; when, in fact, the hoses are sucking together, not permitting the fluid-pressure to be relieved.

When replacing, go ahead and get braided stainless; they won't expand.
