Loss of steering on one side

Postby Makaio » Mon Mar 24, 2008 6:51 pm

I just replaced a cracked steering box bracket with a new one from the dealer. After everything was back in place and tightened, I went for a test drive and noticed a loss of left steering. 1 and 1/4 turns to lock vs. the right side at 1 and 3/4 turns to lock. I shortened the adjustable drag link and it got better but still could use more adjustment. The thing now is that the steering is way off center. Has anyone took our steering wheels off? Is there a master spline? Can the key spline be ground down to reposition the steering wheel?

Aloha,
Matt

Sounds like to me you need to pull the pitman arm off the steering box and move it a few splines if possible to even out your steering from left to right.

Brian,

The pitman arm has 4 master splines. Moving it a quarter turn would be way too much as I tried it.

Damnn the luck. Wonder if a Chevy drag link would work?? They are adjustable instead of fixed like on the Dodges. That would straighten it out.

Brian,

I HAVE an adjustable drag link from Skyjacker. I adjusted it to where my steering is pretty much even from center to lock on the left and center to lock on the right but.... the steering wheel is not straight anymore so..... I was thinking of pulling the steering wheel off and re-clocking it but never took one apart so I'm not sure if it can be done. Do you know if it has a master spline? I could possibly grind it off and reposition the steering wheel or???? Thanks for your efforts. Keep em coming. ;)

I know on the 94 ups there is no master spline, and i think the 1gens are the same way. You should be able to pull the wheel in the cab and reposition it where you need it. just be careful with the clock spring!!

For the record, I just found out that there IS a master spline that needs to be ground with a Dremel or similar tool.

Somebody must have already ground mine then. I moved the wheel over a quarter turn after I switched over to crossover steering. Did you put the steering shaft back in the same position?

The steering shaft didn't move from its original position; the steering wheel was locked when I removed the steering box from the frame. I know the cracked steering bracket shifted the steering box some so I'm wondering if the new bracket affected the placement of the steering box.

I'd Just Move the Coupler

Postby Ace » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:19 am

I thnk the coupler has enough splines w/no master to do what you want. Seems like one spline equals around 25-30 degrees on mine.

For the record....

Postby Makaio » Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:04 pm

Hey Guys,

Just finished adjusting the drag link and repositioned the steering wheel that was 180* off after the adjustment. For the record, it DID NOT have a master spline. After receiving several different answers from different posts, it seems that the two wheel drive models of our trucks do in fact have a master spline whereas the four wheel drive models DO NOT. I can't explain Chrysler's doing.
