Tire advice

Postby dpuckett » Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:04 am

It is time (has been since I bought it) to get some tires for my W350. I had good luck with Mastercraft Courser LTs in my 91 (at 25k, they had 75%+), and got the same tires for my 92 D350, and they were junk- they'll be gone by 40K, and have had a pretty easy life. So, it is on to something else.......

The truck will be a shoeing rig primarily, with some towing duty, but it wont be every day. I need good all around traction, yet something with a decently quiet ride- aggressive mud tires are out. I know about all the big brands- Michellin, BFG, Bridgestone/ Firestone, etc. But, what about the smaller brands? Kumho, Falken, Dean, Uniroyal, Yokahoma, etc?

I'd like some of your experiences with some different types and brands, good, bad, indifferent. Long life is top of the list, followed by wet traction.

Thanks for your input.

Michelin LTX's I average 80,000+mi to a set on these rough ass Kentucky roads and they ride smooth , wear even and balance well.

My BFG A/T's are holding up great and i drive my windy ass mountain road hard. They have good traction in wet conditions. They're not loud enough for my to hear em over my engine. I've also towed with em a couple times, and not a problem.

If you want tread life more than anything....michelins. For the money, I was happy with the last set of nitto terra grapplers I had. They make one called a dura grappler, but I don't know anybody with experience with them.

I've been running a set of Dura Grapplers for about three months. They are a are M+S rated highway tread design. Very smooth quiet ride compared to the BFG ATs. I like them alot so far. If they wear well, I'll buy them again. Good tire for a road/highway truck.

I have no idea how people get so many miles on bfg at's or mt's I never can get more then about 25K - 30K on a set. I rarely tow, hardly ever drive hard, and normally drive between 50-60mph on the freeway. I take them off road once a month, or once every other month, but they just literally disappear beneath me. I really like the Michlien LTX as they do ride great last for a long long time, but they don't have the offroad traction i need. I am currently waiting on my tire guy to get in some michilien XML's as hopefully they will provide me with the combination of lasting and traction.

Daniel I have been using Cooper Terra Trac A/T's for a few years. The rears on my dually have 80K on them. I blew my fronts off on a bent front axle. Some light road noise. Driving a Dodge you probably won't notice it.

I haven't had problems with them going out of round or anything.

We can talk at S.O.P more.
