Drum brake help.

Postby Dieselhick » Thu Dec 18, 2008 1:09 pm

Hi, im new to this website and this is the first time doing brakes on a 1st gen. I have a 91.5 2wd drive with the 12 inch drums. i went to napa to get new drums because mine are rotten and look like they havent been used in years. But the guy at napa asked me if my drums were 3.77", 3.91", or 4.5", does anyone know what this number is refering to and what would be on my truck. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Should be 12x3 for the drums, regardless of what shoes are actually in it.

We got that far but there were three choices of 12" drums, 3.77", 3.91", and 4.5". It didnt say what these numbers were refering too. All i can think of is the axle seal diameter, its the only thing around 4 inches (3.98").

He is asking about the center of the drum that slides over the inside of the hub assy.

I don't know the size to help for your truck. Mine is a dually so the hubs are different. Same with the brake drum.

Would a set of drums from NAPA have studs already in them or do i have to press new ones in myself?

I just reuse the old studs if they arent mangled up. Use a drift punch to seat them in the hub.

Philip- not to argue, but in my experience, the drums have all been the same on the 3/4 and 1 tons. Hubs were different, but the drums all interchanged. I havent owned that many 3/4tons, though.

So i went and measured the opening in my drum and it was just over 5 inches. The problem is this isnt one of the measurements i was given at NAPA the largest number he gave me was 4.5 inches.

Do you have a CarQuest nearby? If not, I have a spare set of drums, turned and ready to go .

I got these part numbers off of Rock Auto's website (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php): BENDIX Part # 140547 and WAGNER Part # BD60328. You could try having your parts guys cross reference the part numbers and see if that narrows down the selection. I haven't had to order drums yet, but those ones on the website only list one part number for all of the 3/4 and 1-ton trucks from 81-93.

Thanks for the info but it turns out the rear drums in my truck were the same ones that are used on a certain axle that finished production at the end of 1990. So none of the heights that I was given by either of the stores were correct, the height of my drums were over 6 inches. So either the Dana 70 in my truck has been swapped out for another sometime in its past or i just got one of the rare 1991.5 that had this brake setup. And it took me over a week to figure this out.

Thanks for the help guys.
