U joints??

Postby hummin cummins » Mon Feb 12, 2007 3:26 pm

I just replaced the driveshaft ujoints and there is still a squeak coming from underneath the truck. When i was putting the new ones in i noticed that there was some play in the transfer case. is that alright? the truck vibrates as i drive down the road and it also squeaks. I have a 250 4x4 truck.

If memory serves me...

Block wheels, Jack up front end, put transfer case in neutral, lock front hubs, turn steering wheel all the way to stops, try to rotate the wheels by hand.

If the wheels rotate hard an axle joint needs to be replaced. This might be it and if I missed anything someone please chime in.

The transfer case should have a little play. The front axle u-joints will clatter like a horse on pavement if they are really bad. You can check them by jacking up the wheel, jambing the axle shaft with somthing and rock the tire back and forth while watching the joint. If there is any play it is bad and if it is greasable this is the time to do it. If both front wheels are getting good traction while turning at all it will tend to hop. Check the front driveshaft cv joint for noise making. Grease everything you can and go from there.

USE YOUR NOSE

Postby BEARKILLER » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:07 pm

 The first indication of a carrier-bearing going bad is a "burning rubber" smell after a drive.

What this smell is is the bearing hanging up and spinning inside the rubber holder.

If a carrier is suspected, drive for several miles, then set the brakes, crawl under, and check the carrier rubber for smoke and smell.

I don't exactly know what happens when the carrier goes bad; I guess it would create a lot of vibration in the driveline and start eating U-joints.

The carrier is two concentric metal rings attached together with inch-thick slotted rubber. My truck had eaten the rubber; I never noticed a smell, just a "clunk" under hard acceleration (and my truck can hardly accelerate as it is).

Anyways, easiest way to check for a bad carrier bearing is to either look at the rubber or push up on the driveshaft. If you can push the shaft up an inch, then the carrier's bad. It shouldn't have an 1/8 inch of play.

found out it is the bearing on the output shaft toward the front of the truck on the transfer case... anyone ever do this fix?

not too much to it. Pull the d-shaft, yoke, extenssion housing/bearing retainer and the bearing should just come out. I think they're about 50 clams.

My carrier bearing failed just last Sunday. I had the burning rubber smell. I thought it was the city I was driving thru. But the noise and vibration got worse and I knew it was the shaft. So I got out and saw the smoking rubber.

I took it apart and what a POS bearing. It only lasted 3k miles. So I ordered a pillow block and I am going to install that so my carrier bearing should out live me.
