The transfer case should have a little play. The front axle u-joints will clatter like a horse on pavement if they are really bad. You can check them by jacking up the wheel, jambing the axle shaft with somthing and rock the tire back and forth while watching the joint. If there is any play it is bad and if it is greasable this is the time to do it. If both front wheels are getting good traction while turning at all it will tend to hop. Check the front driveshaft cv joint for noise making. Grease everything you can and go from there.
