I put 80w-90w gear oil in mine. I don't buy ant particular brand, usually what ever is on sale. If I remember correctly it didn't hold more than a gallon when I did mine, also if you have a posi I think you need to put some kind of additive in it. I don't have a posi so I don't know.

I use 85w-140. It's what we have at work. I haven't had problems yet. ;)

I run Amsoil 75w-90 because my parents' next door neighbor is a dealer for them. The Amsoil recommendation is to run 75-90 unless you tow a lot of weight on a regular basis, in which case you should run the 75-140 (I think that is the grade for the heavier duty Amsoil stuff). The Dana 70 axle is supposed to take 3.5 quarts (7.0 pints) of oil and the Dana 60 (front) axle takes slightly less (about 3.25 quarts or 6.3 pints) according to the FSM for my 90.

this is slightly off topic here ... but ....

in my 1991 w-150 ..... before i got it , my dad had it for a good 10 years , and he would run penzoil 80 -140 gear oil in the diffs or something similar in that weight range .

last summer i changed all the fluids out , and in the diffs ran penzoil 75-90 ( because i had a 5 gallon pail of it for my vw's tranny ) .

anyways before this i would run around 480 to 520 km's per tank of propane .
with no other changes , it now easily runs to 600 km's per tank of propane .

something to think about anyway .

Thanks guys for all your help here.

Servo I can understand how it would increase the milage. When I was a wee lad in my early 30's I use to rebuild my RTO 13 in my big truck and install nothing but mineral oil to make it shift better and roll with ease.

With this truck with no colder then we get here in mid tenn I most likely will use 85 - 90 because I'll be towing a 6000# travel trailer and up mtns at that. Love the info you can get off this site. My hat is off to yea guys.
