Front Axle Swap

Postby ryanihf250 » Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:47 pm

I have a friend that is willing to Swap his front axle out of a 85 W-350 that has 4.10 ratio for mine that is a 3.55. I need to 4.10 to match my Dana 80. It will save me some money. Will this swap be a simple swap over since they are both Dana 60s. Steering and everything should be the same right?
Just making sure this is doable before I attempt it.

Thanks
Ryan

I think it should be a straight swap. I don't think dodge changed much on these trucks from the early 70's till 93.

Based on the very few changes that Dodge put in place over the years, I also think it should be pretty straight forward.

The 85 has the less desirable Selectro lockouts on it, but it should bolt in just fine. Personaly, I'd probably just swap the gears with him. Its a little more "technical" work , but less "grunt" work. :)

Just curious, but won't the '85 have a 4.10 front, and 3.54 rear? Is your friend planning on getting another rear axle?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

He is swapping out his Dana 70 from 89 Dodge that he totaled it has 3.55 ratio. We are also going to swapp locking hubs.
So this will be a win-win situation if this works well! :D

I could be wrong, but I believe the hubs are not the only difference in the axles. I think they have different shafts also.

The hubs were the only thing different. Axle shafts are the same. The 85 year model hubs were like selectomatics. It also had Cast flange to hold the selector on which I did not like, so we changed them out with no problems just took a little time. The swap went very good. We both got what we needed without spending money and very little difficulty! :D
