Dana 70?

Postby DALEDOZER » Mon Feb 19, 2007 6:43 pm

Anyone know if a GM and a Dodge Dana 70 are the same, the one I am looking at has a 35 spline axle shaft, and a 4:56 ratio, was wanting the locker.

What did gm put a dana 70 I thought they only use axles named after how mant cover bolts there are :P The spring pads are about 3/4in narrower on a GM, that's about all I know. Oh but I'm pretty sure the carriers are differnt from 4.10 gear up and 4.10 down. I have a dodge 70 in the bed of my truck with the shafts out, I'll count them tomarrow for ya.

The carrier will interchange between axles, just be shure you have the correct carrier for the ratio you are running. All Dana 70's and the Dodge dana 80's are 1.5" 35 spline.

Not quite. There are 32 spline axles in Dodge D70's too. (mine has 32 spline axles) Best thing to do is pull an axle and count splines before ordering parts.

Thanks for the replies, so is it possible for a complete GM carrier assembly to be bolted in if I changed the 4:56 ring gear to my 3:54 ring gear? I believe thats what your saying KTA, just sounds too good to be true.

Just don't tell anybody where you got the carrier with all of the rumors about gm buying Chrysler...

That particular carrier will not work. The case break on a Dana 70 is at 4.10 and down. I did look in my Dana manual and there were some 32 spline carriers used, so be careful. When Dodge made their slogan Dodge "Diffrent" they meant it.

I worked for gm for 25 years, it follows pretty close to their day to day MO.

Dale the 94 and up Dodge model 70 axles are different spline than our 1st gen's. Keep that in mind during your searches.

TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES

Postby BEARKILLER » Sun Feb 25, 2007 4:14 pm

I snapped an axle in my Dodge Dana 60HD equipped Chevy 4x4.

I went to three junk-yards and pulled dozens of axles, counting splines, measuring lengths, etc.

Although the housings appeared to be the same, hardly any two I looked at were alike.

I finally found the axle I needed, holding the center of two sliding doors together, stuck in a hole in the concrete floor of a salvage yard shop.

If the 70s follow the same pattern, you better take the axle with you and stick it in the hole to see if it fits.
