Found a crew cab, advice?

Postby RumbleFish » Thu Feb 22, 2007 8:14 pm

So I found a 85 crew cab 2wd in need of a little tlc for decent money. Since there was a 85 crew 4wd (with a bad motor) on govliquidation that sold for $3k, and I can pick up this 2wd for about half that, is it worth converting? Or should I just hold out for a 4wd and not worry about it? I know there are a few guys on tdr that have done this, but has anybody on here done it? Am I correct in assuming that it is, for the most part, a bolt in? Or is it a ton of fab work?

A few years ago this truck was in a tornado and a barn fell on it. The hood and both front fenders need replaced. Not a problem. However, the roof skin is wrinkled. It's mainly on the front half of the cab, toward the passenger side. How in the heck would a guy go about fixing that? You guys ever fix/replace a skin? I could grab some pics since they would describe way better than I can. TIA

That Crew Cab wouldn't happen to be 3 miles North of Van Wert, Oh. on St. Rt. 127, would it?

It does look pretty good from the road, except for the damage you mentioned. It has been sitting there since at least June of last year. You might get it for very reasonable price. From that point to my house is about 20 miles. Let me know if you need some help with it.

Dang, you're closer than I thought. I only know about the tornado story since it was on ebay a couple months ago. Sat the whole auction at $1500 with no bids. The interior was really nice, except it smelled like horse doo. The only thing I am leery of is the roof. I dunno how/if its fixable...

There are no new replacement roof panels available for these trucks. The only parts of value would be the rear doors provided they are rust free. I would pass on it as a fixer upper. If I were buying it for spare parts I would not pay more than the value of the rear doors.

It seems like its just cosmetic, not structural damage. I think I'm heading over there tomorrow, I'll get some pics. I did manage to find a cab in a junkyard with rotted out floors. Is it even possible to chagne a roof skin? How bad is it?

After looking at it in the daylight (it was getting dark before) I don't think it is as bad as I thought initally.

I think most of those will pop out. The creases will be harder. I would be more worried about the rust.

I see four good doors, a good interior, matching trim and misc small parts. I don't see this as a $1500 truck. I bought a complete crew cab parts truck last year that has a repairable rusted floor and poor condition seats just in case I could not find a better one and have $500 in that one. After searching for two years I found the crew cab in this thread that sold in Florida for $1300.

Of course I still have the cost of getting it home to Pa which will be around $700 - $900 after the dust settles plus tax & title fees. These trucks are around if you really want one. It's better to wait and find a good one than building a money pit out of a rough one. My opinion but it's your decision.

I agree that it is not a $1500 truck. To me, its worth no more than $1000. If he doesn't jump on that, then I'll leave it sitting there. Thanks for the advice fellas.

I have seen several four-door trucks that have had the top sawed off and replaced with the top from an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser.

The Cruiser roof steps up, just above the windshield, with two forward-facing, angled, windows.

This adds a ton of headroom.

Done right, they look like they were meant to be there.

That cab would be an ideal candidate for that surgery.
