How to get roll pin off carrier

Postby dpuckett » Sat Mar 21, 2009 8:40 am

Like the title says- how do I go about getting the rollpin out of my old carrier, so I can take the spider gears out and put them in my new carrier? I have broken 2 punches (Crapsman, so at least I can get new ones), plus put a chunk of steel in my hand to boot. It is not moving. Would heat from a torch work to loosen/ soften it? I have an extra set of gears with 35spline side gears (truck has 32spline), so if I have to sacrifice the big pin to get the side gears, I will.

How about forging a punch from S7? The punch appears to be spring steel or something similar. I have broken off the tip of my pritchel (used to punch nail holes in horseshoes) enough to know the Crapsman punch isnt S7. I have a couple feet of that, and a forge.

Daniel if that roll pin isn't moving then it is bent. You have a fight on your hands now.

Dan, I broke the bolt off in my S10 that holds the pin in. The head twisted off, leaving the threads and the end in the pin. I took my torch and cut the end out of the pin, and pushed it up enough to be out of the way. The bolt I screwed out with my fingers. I turned the carrier a 1/2 turn, and drove the pin out bad end 1st. That way i only scarred the hole a little, instead of the whole way thru.
Hope this helps, it's about my only bad experience with diffs. Well, except for removing broken axles on dump trucks. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

With a torch and a few drill bits, I got the old pin out, but am having trouble finding a 7/32 roll pin. I may have to get a 3/16, stick it in the forge, and open it up a hair. Let it cool, and it's just as good as new.

If you do that, add a 2nd one inside the 1st. Find one that fits, (maybe the same original size) then start the bigger one, then the smaller into the big one. Then drive them in together.

Good idea, Pete. I'll try that. I'm pretty good in the fire, but, I'd hate to have it fail in this application......

the first time my rear end started making bad noises, i popped the cover to see that the roll pin was broke and the carrier pin was floating out and hitting the housing. i couldnt find the right size roll pin either, i got one from another carrier that a local truckpuller had.

when that one broke, the carrier pin slid out far enough to make a hellacious boom and trash everything except for the axleshafts and housing. i then bought a whole 'nother truck to part out, and it came with a new axle, which had a rollpin in it.

i know i didnt help much, but i have confirmed that the roll pin is difficult to find, and no excuse is a bad excuse when it comes to buying more trucks. at least i got sometihng accomplished with all this typing.
