Lower balljoint seperated!

Postby 1ST(X2) » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:16 am

My first post to 1stGen.

I'm keeping two 1st gens alive, a '93 D250 auto and a '92 D350 Getrag (Big Red) So, I'm glad I found this place.

Last week I had a new set of tires mounted on the front of the 1 ton. As I was backing out of the tire store lot the right side lower ball joint seperated just as I braked. Lukily, I was only traveling at a walking pace. This could have caused a fatal accident should it have happened at hwy speed.

Prior to the old gal showed no signs of front end issues beforehand. I had replaced the balljoints about 35K miles ago, tires were wearing even, kept it lub'd...

The balljoint failure appears to be due to a defective part. I have the old part cleaned up and will get some pictures of the failure.
The quality of parts (China?) these days concerns me.

I now need to replace the brake rotors as the right side rotor was damaged by impact with the lower control arm.

Can anyone here give me a good source for rotors? Last two I bought for the D250 from the local Carquest had "China" on the box. I hope they hold up better than their balljoint.

Thanks,
Dan

All of the busted ball joints I have heard of seem to happen when backing and turning. As far as CHINA crap, add INDIA crap to the do not buy list. Go to the parts store and ask if they have a premium line. When I used to sell parts we sold Autopro ( junk ) and Wagner. The Wagner brand was much better then K TELL RONCO crap.

moog chassis parts used to be good, same with rabestos brakes. I say used to because I haven't had to buy any of there parts recently so I don't know how the quality is. But those two used to be good quality.

In haste I had to go with an Autozone LBJ this time. Wish I could have found a Moog part.

Brake rotors...
What is the difference in the front rotors listed for single rear wheels and duals? Could it be the hole diameter? The dually front rotor mounts with smaller diameter bolts than the single wheel version where the lug studs pass thru.

Asking because the only rotors I'm finding listed online are for single rear wheel apps. I've never seen a D350 that wasn't a dually.

I will take a guess here. I would assume that the difference between the 2 rotors could be due to the fact the dually trucks run a wide hub spacer that is bolted to the rotor. That might be why there is a difference in bolt diameter. As far as single wheel 350's. There are lots of those.

Spicer only on front end or steering parts for me. I had a MOOG go bad, and got a Spicer unit, and it looked much better and heavier designed than the MOOG.

Where are you guys finding "good" parts for these old trucks?

I talked to the local parts house yesterday about ordering me some Wagnor rotors. He claims they are made in China now. Checked around and no one stocks rotors.

I do know the rotors, I obtained thru Carquest, and installed on the D250 had "China" on the box.

I cant help ya on the rotors. And I wouldnt trust the yeah-hoo behind the counter to know the absolute gospel on who owns whom (any of them will tell ya Ford own Cummings  ), and where stuff comes from. But, a "china" on the box would be a good indication it came from the far east.
