E-Brake

Postby Farmboy » Wed Jul 15, 2009 5:13 am

I have not had the rear drums apart on my truck yet so I don't know....
Is there some sort of spring on the e-brake that pulls the cables back when you release the peddle? It keeps hanging up every time I use it. I have figured out that if I get down under the truck I can push the cable back in the tube and the brakes won't drag but this kind of sucks when I am all cleaned up and going out someplace. If there is something simple I need to do then I will tear it apart. I just didn't want to rip into the rear drums only to find out it is something up by the peddle or something like that :x . Thanks in advance for all the help.

Sounds like you need new cables going to the drums. If they arent used frequently, they will get moisture, dust, etc, in them and seize up. Also, when replacing the cables, take the time to disassemble the e-brake arm pivot doo-hickie and clean the rust off the moving parts. My truck has this problem right now.

Mine sticks just a little bit too. If I hold the pedal as I release it, it won't release all the way. I have to let it snap to let go completely. I've also climbed under and wiggled the cables. Stupid things are only a few years old too.

My emergency brake broke off its cables that were only a couple years old.

I have since removed the emergency brake entirely and chalked it off as "weight reduction".

I'm still wondering exactly how screwed I'm going to be if I ever need to take it through a safety inspection... Luckily California doesn't have those.

Supposedly the cables are only a few years old on it. according to the previous owner (who is a trusted family friend). I used to use it everytime I parked it, so the cables got streched out. I tightened the cables and it hasn't released right since. I thought I had it too tight so I loosened the cables some, but it didn't help.
