Holding on the "Dodge" Hood Emblem

Postby Begle1 » Sun Mar 25, 2007 8:08 pm

The "Dodge" emblem, dead center on the hood below the Ram's head, has three little studs that stick through the hood.

I take it that there are supposed to be some sort of nuts on all of these studs, but I only seem to have a nut on one of them, and the thing rattles and is about to fall off.

But it doesn't seem possible to get a nut on the studs? How do I hold this thing on? I'm about ready to JB weld it due to a lack of a better solution...

mopar list a retainer, part #6000050 but it's ns1. most are held on by stamped nuts, they cut their own threads as they go. kinda the same as the ones that hold in the side marker lenses on the front fenders. parts store or hardware store should have what you need.

How are you supposed to get to the studs, though? They're two to three inches away from the hole!

I think they are barrel nuts. You put them in and they wedge, like a sheet rock toggle. (I can't think of the right name, you know, the plastic things!) Then when you put the emblem on they bite the post. Take the emblem off, silicone it back on!

Clean both mating surfaces with alcohol. Let dry. Purchase a small tube of "trim adhesive" at your auto parts store. Apply a small amount to the back of the emblem. Mount emblem. Clean any excess that squeezes out with Q-tip type swabs dampened with alcohol. Check for tightness the next day and recheck in 150,000 miles. That is how we did it in the 70's when I helped to repaint cars that had the danged rear portion of the front fender emblems that you needed to remove the fender to remove. We pryed the emblems off with a putty knife and screwdriver and glued them back on with the trim adhesive. We never had any problems with them falling off.

I would use trim adhesive, but the emblem isn't plush. The only part that is in contact with the hood is about 1/16 of an inch around the letters. And even then, the emblem doesn't follow the curve of the hood very well. [eyecrazy]
