Windshield Wipers Broke

Postby Begle1 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 8:50 am

My windshield wipers don't work anymore. The motor works, but the wipers don't wipe. If I grab them then I can rotate them by hand easily, so I take it that a clutch or gear broke someplace.

Anybody have this happen before?

Anybody have this happen in the rain on the freeway before? :x

pull the cowl, follow the linkage and you'll find (or won't find in this case) 3 nylon bushings. one has fallen out. they're easy enough to replace. mopar part# 3799089. list $3.50 ea. also available aftermarket in a pack of 3 in the help section (orielly's napa, etc). replace all of them while your in there. keep spares in the glovebox.

btw, there is a distinct difference in the quality of the aftermarket and mopar ones (not just because i sell mopar parts :P ). the cheap one you can snap in by hand, the mopars require a vise or channel-lock pliers.

whatever you do, make sure they're pointing the correct direction when you snap them in, they will usually be ruind if you take em back out.

I got the aftermarket ones, and had to use some channel lock pliers to pop them in. Looked identical to the ones I took out (which could well have been replacements), only without the aging.

My problem was that the bar connecting the wipers to the motor fell off. There was a single nylon bushing, about 1/2 inch in diameter and 1/2 in tall, that pressured the wiper bar to the motor bar; it wore through after 17 years. New little bushing cost under $4.00 from Dodge.
