D-range or E-range

Postby Begle1 » Mon Apr 09, 2007 9:22 pm

Anybody ever run D-range tires? I never put any kind of weight on my truck, and aren't D-ranges cheaper and with as high a speed rating as E's?

Would I be a fool to buy D-range tires next time?

D range??? Heck I've been running Passenger rated tires P265/75/16's for about 3 years on my 89 4wd. If you don't haul weight, don't worry about it. I have loaded up the bed with bricks, wood, gravel etc before, just my tires were awful squishy. I like the ride they give. You need all you can get with a 4wd log wagon. I would not be no where near afraid to run D rated tires.

I think they do, but these came off a newer 1/2 ton Dodge truck. Goodyear Wrangler of some type. Got a good deal on wheels and tires, sold the wheels and made money on it :D .

I had some D-rated tires on the front of mine for a while and they got tore up pretty fast compared to E-rated tires.

If the price is right there's no reason not to, though.

Wouldn't tire wear be more based on the "wear rating", whereas the "D", "E" and "P" are the "weight rating"?

While on the subject, do you get a noticeably better ride with the lighter rated tires on? I've always wondered if I had a cruising rig set up (no heavy loads or towing) if it would ride better with lighter tires.

I noticed a much better ride both in softness and handling.

On the subject of wear...the Geolanders (when I bought them 3 years ago) had the same or better better mileage rating than any of the big name tires and they were 2/3 the cost. So far they have held up very well as I've got about 50 K on them and they still look good.

Of course I running a 2wd truck.

I've never noticed a lick of difference between D and E rated tires, and I have run a lot of different tires through the years. If you want a smoother ride, change the air pressure. The 215/85-16 Ds in Mom's pickup dont make it any smoother than the 235/85-16 Es. I think bushings, ball joints, shocks, leaf spring arch, etc, have a greater impact. Of course, most of my expereince is in duallies, so the SRWs may have a more noticeable difference than the DRWs.

Daniel, the real test is the stubborn 1st gen leaf sprung 4WD. You would notice a BIG difference there in ride.

My 1990 D250 has "D" rated. I'm 99.99% sure it was sold new with them. My 1992 D250 is OEM with "E" load range.

The trucks have the same front end. My 1990 is rated for less than the 1992. May be the tires...............???......... I don't know, nor do I care. I simply know the front end is the same but the load rate is different.
