Club Cab 149" WB Rear Driveshaft Measurements

Postby BobS » Wed Apr 11, 2007 7:38 pm

I am gathering parts for my upcoming crew cab cummins conversion. My crew cab with the 6 foot bed and has a 149" wheelbase which is the same wheelbase as a club cab with an 8 foot bed. So I'm looking for a couple of rear drive shaft measurements from someone that has a 5 speed 4WD club cab. First is the outside diameter of the shaft. Is it 2-1/2" or 3" ? Second is the length of the rear/rear section. If it is 3" is it the same length as a standard cab 8 ft bed version? Would this make the front section of the rear drive shaft about 18 inches long? Thanks guys.

I'd find the cross member where you can mount the center support bearing and do the measurements off there. I'd get at the very least a 3-1/2in, maybe even 4" driveshaft if I had to have it made. Stock was 3-1/2 I believe, for the rear. Might have been only 3" on the front, but no smaller.

I'd also try to get the lengths a little closer to even, along with the angles.

Thanks Daniel,

My donor Cummins truck came with an eight foot bed and the rear drive shaft's od is 3 inches. I was hoping to relocate the center support bearing cross member forward and use the donor trucks drive shaft as the rear portion of the rear drive shaft. Then instead of the slip yoke's u-joint bolting directly to the transfer case it would get an extension shaft of around 3" x 19" to make up the difference in length. So if this 19" shaft is a standard part found on a club cab I would not need to have one fabricated since there could be some available in wrecking yards. The crew cab has 2-1/2" od drive shafts which seem a bit too small.

One thing to keep in mind is that with junkyards parts, esp like drivehafts, they can be warped, but not visible to the naked eye. That will cause a horrible vibration. A good shop can build a new shaft for <$200, I'd think.
