If it is the wider-set numbers (compare it to a 93 or late 92), it is likely the gears inside the speedo housing that get old and brittle and eventually break. Southern Electronics has new updated ones for sale. May as well get both the big and little ones and know how many teeth you need on each one. I ended up having to pay shipping twice. My 92 has a 93 speedo (even has provisions for an auto gear selector :D), and it ahs a sealed assembly that once it's broke, it's broke, but they appear more reliable.

I'd pass on the junkyard gears- they are just as old, and likely cracked. Your best bet would be to get some upgraded aftermarket gears from Southern Electronics. I think they even included instructions, but I also read a very detailed write up on one of these sites about doing it. I did the change on my 90. The gears cost $50 or so for both (and you will eventually need both, also need to know how many teeth they have), but I think it is a small price to pay for keeping accurate track of MPGs, maintenance intervals, etc.

Do I have to take the odometer out to find out the number of teeth? I sure hope not
