Fuel Tank Leak

Postby dchelette » Sat Nov 14, 2009 6:59 am

Fuel tank has a small split. It's seeping fuel making a mess. The tank is polyethylene I think. Any ideas on how to patch it? Was thinking of wood burning iron to try and melt it and seal the split. All ideas welcome.

Thanks

3m makes a product called panel bonding adhesive , that should work fairly well on dodges fuel tanks , assuming ;

you remove all traces of diesel with laquer thinner ,

seal the split as best as you can , either with a plastic welder , or like you where thinking a wood burning iron / soldering iron .

grind the plastic with a 36 grit disk ,

wipe it down with thinner again
then apply a layer of panel bonding adhesive 6 to 8 inches away from each edge of the hole .
it takes sevel hours to set up , 24 hours to cure , but that can be cut way down with gentle use of a heat gun .

You should have posted 2 days ago. Mark Nixon just went to Dallas with a load of parts, he could have delivered you a tank.
Maybe send him a PM anyways, he has lots of parts.

Depending on where it's split, I wouldn't trust a repaired tank. 20 something gallons of fuel hitting the road can be dangerous for somebody, and expensive for you.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks for the info. The more i study it the more i think i will replace it instead of repairing.
