DANA 70 identifiers

Postby TRENDZ » Sun Jan 10, 2010 3:03 pm

I have an early 91 cab/chassis. I want a posi diff. It has an open diff with 3.07 gears. What are my options? I've been lead to believe that the 3.07 was alone in ring gear spacing, and no posi carrier was ever factory produced for it. I've read more than once that there are two posi carriers, 4.10& down/ 4.56& up. If this is true, than the 3.07 is alone, because I had a posi out of a dana 70 with a 4.10 gear, and it didn't fit in my old truck with 3.07 gears until I put it in the lathe. Anybody have any more defined info on this?

I have a 307 factory posi. They were made. I found my rear in a junkyard. They had it listed as a factory posi ( they had scraped the truck and keep good records ). We pulled the cover off and sure enough, it is. It replaced my open rear that let go. As to which carrier will fit and which one won't. No idea. I know there are guys here that have added posi's to there 3.07 setups.

Hmmm.... really stumped now. How do I find out if I have a dana70 or a dana70HD? I would assume that being a long wheelbase cab/chassis diesel, that it would be an HD, but it only has 32 spline axles.

O.K. today I had a guy at work look in the chrysler parts program. And it was confirmed that you could get posi with 3.07s. For a spicer 70-71 with power-loc, there is a before/after date that is "up to 11-12-90" and "after 11-12-90". (I don't know if this is the truck build date, or the axle build date) The early date specifies the 3.07 by itself, with it's own part number (stamped 707130x) With the 3.55,4.10 sharing a part number(stamped 707073x) And then the 4.56 with it's own part number(stamped 73489x).
The later date axles list 3.07,3.55,4.10 (stamped 74326x)as using the same diff case.
This would explain why my old truck/carrier needed machining to fit.
I'm still a bit sketchy on how to positively identify my axle though. There is no cast number on the webbing of the housing, and I cant find any stamped numbers on the axle tube. The cover tag has rotted away to the point that it is not ledgable.

A 3.07 rear axle (D-71) has an extra machined spot at the top of the center section, just to the right of the diff cover.

AFAIK there are no stock D-71 3.07 geared rear ends with the 35 spline axles.
You could likely MAKE one, though.

I do believe there are at least 2 separate bearing sizes for either dually rear (C&C or pick-up) and the 1-ton single rear, 3.07 included.

hey-Hey!!!,
There is indeed 35-spline, 3.07 Powr-Lok made; I just got one. needs much rehabilitation in terms of clutch packs and carrier bearings...:) Studs/cones on the hubs. I believe the studs/cones is the differentiator for 35-spline D70's in Dodge apps.
cheers,

i've heard reference here that if you axles are held with cone locs and nuts you have a 35 spline axle, if thats true then i have a 3.07 35 spline D70 in my 90 W250......

That is true.
Since I posted that last comment, I have found several that indeed are 35 spline and have the studs/nuts/cones, not the bolts.

In my reading circle I have yet to read anyone with a 32 spline 3.07. Even if you had the super rare intercooled truck with them.

I have an '89 3.07 geared axle and a '91 3.07 one here, I'll pull and axle on each and try to clear this up, one way or another.

Mark isn't here any more, you need to try some of the other forums, I think he's on 1 or 2 others.
