Front spring upgrades, Timbrens & whatnot.

Postby Tintacker » Mon Jan 11, 2010 10:09 pm

One of the projects I am planning this year is to replace / upgrade the front springs.
I'm not going to say that money is no object but I am willing to spend a few bucks to get a smother ride without sacrificing too much payload. I'd also like to cruise down a gravel road without my head hitting the roof.
The front springs are totally shot right now. I measured about an inch of travel to the steel stub where the rubber bump stops used to be.
I have ridden in a 93 club cab with the 2.5" skyjacker springs and have decided to look for something better. I am not looking for a lot of lift, just a softer ride with some more travel.

Right now I am leaning towards a set of Alcan or Deaver springs with a slightly softer spring rate, some Timbrens to replace the bump stops And a set of quality shocks (think bilstein 7100).
The plan is the same for the rear I just want to tackle the front first.

What do you think? am I going in the right direction or is this going to be a waste of $$$$ ?? Anyone have experience with Timbrens?

Thanks,
John

If I could do it over, I would go for the alcan's. I think I actually have a good set of the skyjackers, have zero complaints, but for the long haul I think a custom set would be superior. it seems if you had a custom set built, then added timbrens, that would be a great way to go. through in a sway bar and your in business

I have the Syjackers, front and rear swaybars, Timbrens and Rancho 9000's all around. You'd think with that investment it would ride better than it does. The ride is not plush by any stretch of the imagination. In fact it is quite harsh IMHO, compared to say a stock 3rd gen, for example. But it is a work truck, has excellent hauling capacity and handles very predictably and crisply. But you'll never fall asleep at the wheel on a long haul!

I think the only way you will get a better ride is to move the spring mounts and get longer springs. Yes, Alcan or whatever custom shop you choose, but longer springs.

Call these guys direct and tell them what you want. I have been to there place to take photos for a magazine. They are going to do my rear spring pack this spring.

Make sure that you get a leaf added under the longest top leaf all the way out to the ends to support the ends better.

Timbrens are ok if you are either loaded or empty, not in between. My buddy works for a camper place and he sells them. He said if you are partially loaded where you aren't quite on the Timbrens, when you hit a bump it will bump hard when they hit. For loaded they're great, they cut sway and help carry the load.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks for the replies. I have a lot of research to do and I plan on doing a write up when I get this project going in a few months.
As for the longer springs, it makes sense and looks like not much trouble for the rear but the front is a different story. I'll be calling Alcan and Deaver this week to get their take on it.

SNOOT, sounds like you know some people at Deaver, think you could get me a deal? :D :D
