Buying a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series truck?

Postby Begle1 » Fri May 11, 2007 7:18 pm

So, if my now-wrecked truck is appraised as totalled, and I can buy it back, then I might have a few thousand dollars and a few empty weeks to play around with.

Just spit-balling ideas; wasn't there talk someplace amongst the big-time drag racers of buying retired Craftsman truck chassis and converting them to Cummins use? I remember somebody mentioning that they could be found for around $5,000?

Think it would be worth it?
If I installed all the lights and stuff would it be street legal?
Think the suspension would hold up to the added weight and daily use? Think that the steel tube frame chassis would take the torque?

I mean, that'd be bitchin'. Finding brake and suspension components might be a bit difficult, but the aerodynamics would be great, I'd drop 1,000 pounds of total weight, and I'd have all the 6-star safety ratings.

It's a thought that I had to go through.

If not a NASCAR, would there be anything else worth swapping the driveline into? I don't think anything else would be worth it if I could get the frame straightened for $3,000.

I think buying the truck back is a mistake. You already own it. tell them you want the repair money. Weather it's totald or not. My insurance co. tried this with me a few years back. Wanted 1100 for the salvage. repair est was 3300 car booked for 2900. I told them i was going to fix it. they cut me a check for the 3300. i sold the salvage to two diff people 800 for motor and trans 400 for body. total money:::4500. If i would have done it their way i would have given away 1500 bucks.

WOW! dont look bad but if the frame is bent, then get a donor vehicle. My uncle has been doing collision repair for many moons. Whenever a frame gets bent beyond the bumper supports (I think I got that right), they say its totaled.

Now on the other hand, if you really loved the truck, find somebody very reputable.

A Cummins powered Nascar Truck series vehicle?

Truck looks fixable to me. It's amazing how much stuff flexes in a crash, I bet the frame is straight. It just flexed in the wreck and the bed kissed the cab.

The window WAS from your head. I'd bet your ears passed the back wall of the cab. Like I said, stuff really moves around in a wreck.

Now that it's been a few days, how are your neck and back?

Judging from that picture, something's crooked... It might be that the bed isn't square any more. The frame shop guy from next door said that the frame was crooked; haven't gotten a second opinion yet, though.

This picture makes me think that the bumper was pushed forward a bit too. Funny how you don't notice things until a couple days after your hit. (Notice the nice acid marks all over from the guy's exploded battery, too...)

I wasn't sore until the night when I went to bed, then I woke up really sore and not being able to move my head more than 45 degrees in either direction. A nurse friend said that it was normal, but to get X-rays just to be safe; the X-rays checked out fine, and the soreness and mobility came back in a couple days.
Didn't stop the doctor from prescribing me Vicodin and Flexeril though... I just needed Advil.

If my head broke the window, I'm pretty surprised that I didn't have any soreness or easter-egg on the back of the cranium. Maybe it's like a tornado pushing a straw through a brick.

OK, that does look a bit off. Get a couple estimates and if the shop seems confident that they can fix it, get it fixed.

Bumper mounts are squooshed pretty good, but they're supposed to do that. New mounts and a new bumper will put that right.

Where this is a property damage situation (someone hit you) the other company is liable and they will pay up to the "actual cash value" of the vehicle. From what I can see in the pictures by the way the body is sitting to the cab it looks like the right frame rail might be kinked over the rear axle and maybe swayed to the left a bit(left corner of the box to the cab). I would guess you are in worse shape than the truck is with breaking that rear window with your head.

The Craftsman Trucks will here here this weekend. I mean right here. They invade our quiet neighborhood. They park all over the place and the roads are PACKED with people. I hate it. Tell 'em to find another race track somewhere's else.
