questions on 4x4 conversion.

Postby bsmithcummmins » Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:49 pm

Hi so im wanting to do a 4x4 swap on my 2wd cummins, its is an 89 non intercooled automatic. I kind of figure it cant be too horribly hard, bassically just take all the 2wd stuff off, build some shackles, mounts for shocks, custom driveline and throw on tcase. I know it wont be all that easy but im wondering if there are lots of small things that add up to make it a fairly hard project. What kind of prices should i pay for the axle, and tcase. how much should it cost in the end if i do most or all of the fab work? please give me some insight on some things i will need and the difficulty level of this. Thanks.

There have been several conversions here, might have to do some digging, but most, if not all your answers can be found. "1990" did a detailed conversion on his.

I was in your same posisition with the exact same truck. I've heard guys say they wouldn't to a 4x4 swap unless they had a pristine crew cab frame. To do it the the way the factory did would be quite a process, but there are short cuts that work just as well. That being said, I just live with a 2wd. The next one will have 2 live axles ;)

I'm looking at doing one also. I'm friends with a good welder/4x4 builder and he will do most of the hard stuff. I'm having trouble finding a t case and dodge Dana 60 though. I have found a bunch of Chevy d60s but not sure how they match up.
