exhaust brake

Postby 93oneton » Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:30 pm

I started this little project before my truck got hit. It kinda got put on the back burner while I put the ol girl back together. I've wanted on for a while but couldn't see spending the cash on one. I've looked around at other home built ones and figured I could tackle this. I bought a small air cylinder off eBay. It takes pressure to open and close it. I had a buddy machine a disc out of 3/16" steel plate. He also machined a flat spot and drilled and tapped a 1/2" steel rod for the shaft. I picked up a 3 way 2 position 12 volt air swith to control the position of the brake. I also have a micro switch that will b placed on the throttle linkage so the brake can't be accidentally engaged with the throttle open.

I have a 12 volt compressor I bought for my air ride on my rat rod but was to slow. It builds 100 psi with no problem. It will fill the co2 tank I have for storage just fine.

That looks cool! It's nice to have friends with skills. ;) I started to make one myself, and gave up as the disc looked crappy and I don't really need it for the 2-3 times a year I tow with it.

That looks cool. What diameter is the disc and the exhaust pipe?

I'm sure I could sell a few if it works good enough, but not sure. Well see if it works first.

Got the pipe drilled and test fitted the flap. It fit and turns like it should.

How are you going to seal where the shaft comes out of the pipe? That was my other problem, I didn't want soot all over under the hood, and couldn't come up with a good sealing system that wasn't big or ugly.

I pushed bronze bushings into the sleeves where the shaft goes through. I've seen a few done this way. They seem to work good this way. It fits tight but still spins freely. Well see when I get it done I guess

I got the bronze bushings and collars installed tonight. Had to shave down the flap a hair to make it clear the bushings on the inside of the tube. Hope to get the mount for the for the air cylinder built tomorrow eve.

Those bushings are a good idea! I think I would have left that end open though, just in case you have a problem and need to lube or get at the shaft. It looks way better than what I cobbled up before I quit. ;)

only one and is getting capped off. The other and were the servo arm will mount will be clamped on to the shaft somehow. so all you have to do is remove the servo arm the two bowls in the flap and then it will all flat out the bottom.
