Overdrive Fail Safe

Postby Greenleaf » Thu Jan 04, 2007 9:50 am

I have found that the speed sensor will go AWOL and, although one can drive w/out the speedo and cruise, it's tough w/out the OD

A switch installed somewhere inside the cab can by-pass the VSS and provide the ground circuit for the OS solenoid. I tapped into the wire at the large harness directly on top of the brake booster. It's an easy spot. I used a headlamp hi-low beam switch and mounted it to the floor. Used two of the three terminals. Grounding one to the floor (or under dash).

I can now control OD shift by this floor mount switch or the manual switch on the dash and shifter lever. You guys w/autos are installing the new shifter lever/switch assy .......right!?

I actually did mine just by adding a toggle switch to the shift lever for the time being..dash switch didn't work when I got her.

Is wrecking yard still the best place to get shift lever? Any one know how mutch they are from dealer? I have to use o/d in 1/4 mi. cause my gearing is too low (3:54). hate to lean forward to turn on o/d.

I don't know about getting them at salvage. They might not want to part out a steering column. I got mine at the dealer a few years ago and I think it was about $37. I have also seen them on EBay.

2nd gen auto shift lever

Postby Firstgenfanatic » Wed Oct 01, 2008 4:58 pm

I just scored a 2nd gen auto shift lever for $20. on Craigslist. I was just in the right place at the right time. :D The dealership sells them new for around $35.
