Upgrade converter or waste of time/money

Postby bgilbert » Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:31 pm

Previously with a PDR35, ported 21 housing, Scheid EDM's, I mustered up 9.64 et and 76mph in the 1/8th mile. Hooked good, ran good. Now I've installed the SP66, and upgraded the fuel pickup and supply to 1/2"id. Went to the track and first run was terrible, 11 seconds  . Open diff, roasted the right rear tire for awhile. After each pass I made, my times got faster and I stopped burning off the one tire. I eventually got it to 7.75 at 73mph. I'm thinking the trans was just slipping more and more each time, not breaking the one tire loose. The engine was screaming away, 52psi of boost, but I wasn't going anywhere. I'm guessing the trans was slipping bad. Buddies of mine were down near the finish line, said it sounded great, wasn't burning the tire off, but sounded like it should've gone faster. I always thought if you didn't have a good transmission, you couldn't load the engine very well. Well I'm probly making 450hp at the crank, but I'm sure not putting it to the ground.

BTW tach not installed yet, and no tranny temp gauge. I know it was hot, the tranny cooler lines were extremely hot to the touch after a few passes:shock: .

This same setup, injectors, turbo and intercooler made 450rwhp 900+ftlbs on my 5sp truck. It also had the 14mm pump, but it only produced 50psi of boost compared to 52psi with this 205 12mm pump.

That said, if I wanted to continue drag racing, I would need a setup that can hold 500rwhp 1000ftlbs. Would upgrading the 518 converter, valve body and flexplate be a waste of money/time? At this time I don't see buying a built 47rh. My trans shifts excellent. I feel it's a good transmission, most likely a somewhat fresh rebuild. But the converter ain't cutting it. I'm sure I'll get some laughs when I tell Suncoast or whoever I want a converter for a 518 VE pumped 1st gen capable of laying down 500rwhp  . What do you guys think?

if your going to do this as a race only truck a 727 would work. no need for overdrive and thats just something else to break. ultimately you want to set the trans, gears and tires to cross the line in high gear at 100 rpm below max. of course that screws you up if you build it to run 1/8 mile and then try to run 1/4. and if you set it up to run 1/4 you'll give up a little in the 1/8.

a th400 can be built stronger for less but i dont know about convertor availability for a diesel. either way a trans-brake is available. i've never driven a diesel with brake but on a gas burner its a kick in the pants.

of course non of this really applies if your building a dual purpose street-strip-tow vehicle. then the concessions will be much greater.

I think 205 refers to the pump # of a intercooled engine such as 1991.5 to 1993.

Daryl, I have bought alot of stuff from those guys. When I build a 47re/rh that is where I get my goodies usually. They dont offer as much valve body stuff as I would like, but they have all the good hard parts. Depending on the application I use either the Raybestos Blues or the Alto reds.

they are what i am usin in my C6 as well, 5 x 5 x 5 clutches n kolenes, and a wide kevlar band. Used a really good tranny cooler and so far so good. No excessive heat and nuthin burnt as of yet, and I am truckpullin every weekend.

Nuthin harder on a trans than pullin!

May seem a little pricey at first glance - but my first build usin other peoples stuff lasted 12 miles and scattered all over the pavement.

So build once, or build two or three times - which is cheaper?

Bill, don't rule out Dave Georend. Your going to have 1000.00 bucks or more in a decent converter, SFI flexplate and VB. Or you could call mysteryman and see if he still has a Getrag he rebuilt, it's been awhile but last I talked to him he had one he wanted $1400.00 for it.

They have the best price I have seen on the SFI flexplates for our trucks. Lots of other goodies there on that site too.

Things are always the cheapest when you buy from the source. :) Their triple-lok converter is the original triple-lok that precision industries makes, not the modified one that ATS sold. Now if you want to build a 727 with the goodies then you need to go to A&A in Indy. They make the straight cut planetaries and other sweet stuff, but no lockup in a 727 unless you build a clutch-flight, and I aint seen any of that stuff in years and dont advise trying it behind a diesel unless you like broke input shafts. I believe DTT markets alot of PATC parts only with their name on it, they shure look identical, and perform the same too, but cost less. 8)

I'm in the final stages of rebuilding/upgrading my heap's A518 (RH46) using a BUNCH of stuff from those folks (PATC = Performance Automotive & Transmission Center). http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

I've increased the clutch/steel count in all the packs to name a few things as well as gone to a converter from SunCoast.

It's ether gonna scream . . . . . . . . or 'splod really, really loud,
