Do you have 3.54's or 4:10's?

Personally, the 1st Gen drivetrain is crap for pulling as is. You need to swap in and flip a NV271 from a 3rd Gen to get the low gearing we need. The NP205 is weaker and only has a 1.96:1. In fact, 1st gear 4x4 HIGH is just a tad bit faster (5.9xx to 5.5xx) than 2nd 4x4 LOW. Then you have a 3.xx:1 in 3rd 4x4 LOW which is too fast even with 4:10's.

Then you have the Dana 70.

I have 4 hooks, about 20-30 drag strip passes, and numerous street launches on my stock Sach's clutch. It holds pretty good. I have even slipped it quite good and it still holds 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Also, read this. Cole Dow flipped this 271 to fit his fire breathing, NOS burning, turbo sparking, nasty P-pumped 1st Gen.

Andrew (pulltilbroke) also has a very stout drivable puller, I think he got there by way of the school of hard knocks,
so he can probly give you a pointer of three.

I would be careful when I said generation "x" trucks powertrain is crap for pulling... I know of many nights this certain gen 1, VE pumped, 205 truck sent them packin in their shiny newer crap.

1st, high range? maybe in stock class about 2005!

3rd gear, low range with a 205 and "non-highway" gearing is going to be the minimum if you want to get serious about kicking some asz. Don't forget the dual disc. My next move is direct, low.

The 205 will go a long way behind a VE truck pulling. Put a T6 billet rear bearing retainer on and run it. You can also upgrade the rear output shaft to one with no oil grooves. Or one that is supposedly cut from a blank dana 80 pinion $$$. The 205's "weakness" is the tall 1.96 low range which creates more bind internally with the helical cut gears that creates thrust and with massive cummins torque, the case splits. Thats why there is a PROFAB kit the mod gas guys run with straight cut gears, I believe it is 3.00 reduction in low, last I knew the 29 spline input dodge kit wasn't being made yet.

The 241/271 are plenetary drive 2.72 low range cases. They have less internal bind due to design differences. They can break too, the chains stretch and the thrust washers go out in the plentaries. I have had 4 of them pass through my shop with broken cases.

Junk the dana 70 and go GM 14 bolt FF, or dana 80.

Deep axle ratios are the real secret of successful pulling trucks. The mechanical advantage takes the strain off of the rest of the driveline and passes it to the axle shaft. Make that VE motor sing... if she goes, she goes  , and if she blows, she blows  .

Here's the little old VE truck taking it out the gate...

IMO the 72-93 Dodge chassis is a decent pulling chassis once you address a few issues. First off you need to ditch the blocks or run bars, then the d70 wont last long. I have yet to tear up a 205.

Localy there is a few good running old dodges. Mine does alright but theres plenty ofstuff I can still do to it, Shoot its a 425,000 mile truck.

A few of my good hooks from last year.

I havnt pulled mine since I did a lot of the drive train work, but ive done a few things.

using the yoke off a d70, throw a 1410 yoke on the d60 up front, a rear driveshaft 1410 yoke from a np205 on the front driveshaft transfercase output, and a shortened rear driveshaft.

flip the shaft so the slip joint is near the transfercase and you have a 1410 front shaft with no more of the CV joint bullcrap.

Ive got a d80 rear out of a cab and chassis DRW truck, I can run dual rear wheels if I want, or singles and its only a few inches wider than a stock axle.

bars made with Cromo left and right hand heims, for adjustability, and a crossmember up front that they attach to

awesome! Keep it coming guys!! And Jon, as soon as this gets over im im gna be buying another truck. So im trying to decide which to pull the 92 or the 96 cc dually 4x4. I love the styling of the 92 but the 96 is obviously gna compete more, and its a dually to boot. But on the other hand I also want the dually for stability when towing...so im torn between the 2.

Here's a cheap way to pull. Get an old Dodge or other manufacturer gas truck to play with. At least with the old Dodge's (72-79) they already have 'non-highway' gears, 4wd 3/4-1 ton's with 4.88's. Sure it's gas, but it's alot cheaper to have fun with. I pull with a 74 W300 beater. They usually can be had cheap and don't break as often as a 1st gen CTD. Here's one you could get your start in pulling with, 74 W300, 318 2bbl, 4 speed, Dana 70 front and rear, divorced 205, 4.88's. With the pto winch, bed and driver it weighs in around 6200lbs. My point is if you don't have the funds, but still want to pull, go the cheap route! lol I'm selling this one for $1500obo  .

Vanilla, use 4 low and move the shifter from 1 to 2, and if you are going fast enough, to drive with OD off.

I have a set of Interco $T$ and a set of Pro Comp X terrain, both are 33x12.5x17 roughly. I have the pro comps for super loose tracks and have yet to run them.

A good all terrain tire (bfg all terrain/general grabber a/t) is real effective in the street class.
