Go Fast Safety

Postby BC847 » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:18 pm

OK, I recently got my heap up close to 100mph at the track. I pooped pencils for a day or so afterward.

What's a descent full-faced helmet for the money?

What are y'all doing about drive-shaft loops?

I've not really dug into it. I'm thinking one at the front of the rear/long axle (mine's a 4x4 with a short intermediate shaft). Do I need one fro the intermediate as well?

How are folks addressing the front drive-shaft?

Considering I'm relatively mild in power, any recommendations for the trans (A518 non lock-up)? Is it really necessary here just yet?

Just thinking . . . . ..

helmet can be had fairly cheap, driveshaft loops all depends on how much suspension travel you got and how tall the truck is an everything like that, are you running a divorced t-case or a carrier bearing??? the front loop should be within 6 inches of the front u-joint......i would run it in 3rd gear and see how it does, if you are over revving the engine then need to let it shift into OD, i would recommend a lock up converter cause that will let you transfer alot more power in OD.......some trucks slingshot when the converter locks and some dont......

In the 8th, it's a toss-up as to whether OD is of benefit. 8.81 @ 75.81. The 4th is 14.16 @ 93.46 at the moment. (1.8 60' marks).

I'm fixing to bolt on a better head and expect to eventually get into the 13's for this coming summer.

The intermediate shaft has a joint at the butt of the married NP205 and a carrier bearing at the tail-shaft end.

The tail-shaft, I'm thinking of a single loop for the forward joint.

www.helmetcity.com

I bought an open face helmet for when I autocross at a local swap meet for $140. Its made by G-Force. If you need a Snell SA rated helmet (I did for track days), you won't find too many cheaper. Does your track require a helmet, or are you doing this on your own? If they don't require one, or are loose with tech (tech at my local-ish track consists of having at least one window to shoe polish your number on) you could get away with a non rated, or a Snell M rated helmet. The M rated will be cheaper, and the non rated cheaper yet. The difference between the SA (specialty application) and M (motorcycle) rating is the SA has a flame retardant lining.

I would seriously reconsider the full faced deal. Have you tried one? I have a fat head, and got somewhat clausterphobic in one. It was too hot, and my nose touching on the front of the helmet annoyed me to no end, so thats why I went with the open face, plus it was cheaper.

RumbleFish,
Back in my motorcycle days I rode with a Shoei full faced helmet.
I managed to wipe-out hard enough once or twice to bust my face pretty good on the inside of the helmet. I can't imagine the outcome had it been less of a helmet.
I don't mind paying for quality where needed.

In this case, I'm taking it upon myself to get and use the helmet. ;)

Where can I find information as to safety device specifications, such as the safety loops?

Thanks folks. :)

sfi is the corporation that determines the specs. if you have the time you can dig on thier site http://www.sfifoundation.com/home.html

as for driveshaft loops etc. most diesel orginizations have posted rules for classes that match the et's the class runs. heres dhra's 2007 rulebook.
