3rd gear 4x4 launch?

I've heard of people doing this, but is it really faster? Wouldn't you bog the mottor hard?, what kinda power would you need to be makin to keep from boggin?, then would blow up your get rag?
Sold 91 now-intercooled W250, 388WHP 923WTQ on #2 only 423WHP 968WTQ on meth 0% correction.

I'm sure you need power, but it's more about how good of a button clutch you have to handle the slippage. My South Bend 13" FE would not take it at all, at 450rwhp. I'm pretty sure KTA, launches in 2nd. GLHS, I think he launches in 3rd. But he's got a button clutch IIRC. The stock Sachs clutch will not hold you can just about bet that.

my stock sachs wont handle a 2wd 3rd gear launch. it is fun spinnin the 4 rears for a moment, but when they hook up it drives through the clutch almost instantly. i hate to think what my flywheel looks like :shock: .

I've got a 13" ofe clutch, it's supposed to hold 500hp and 900lb, and I would quess my hp is around 300. With a week 2wd start and no tach to judge shift points It'll run a high 15. I would think if I could launch better it would drop a few tenths, but if a 3rd gear launch is gonna smoke my clutch I ain't even gonna try. It cost too much, and I hate pullin trannies. :x
