Why i'm doing this/ my first pull

Postby redneckroot » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:57 am

I figured since i've been asked here is why i'm putting the money and time into my pile-o-rust. A couple of weeks ago I decided to take my truck to the local pull and pull in the "stock" diesel class. The announcer poked fun at my truck and it pulled 249 ft. It has a BHAF no muffler and that morning I cranked the fuel and smoke screws. I placed 9th out of 10 trucks and the 10th truck broke a front drive shaft at 12ft. So basically I've gotten pissed off and I plan to go back next year and see what I can do. My truck is 100% apart down to the frame once it comes back from the blaster I plan on putting traction bars on it and going from there. I still want to be able to tow a trailer but I really want to fill that %%%holes announcing booth full of biodiesel soot. So looks like I'm going to be broke for awhile wasting money on this thing. I think that these trucks come with a sickness when you buy them.

I know the feeling. I went to the drag strip and for the first time this year I popped off a cooler boot and the announcer said " there is another dodge diesel broke " KISS MY ASS... made me ugly...

  Now that was funny. Back on subject though go ahead and box that frame really well while you have it down that far. I'm sure you know the first gens aint known for there strong frames. I think if I were you I'd find myself a 47rh/re or a standard to shove in her.

Does anyone have any pictures of a boxed frame? I thought about boxing it but then i was thinking that it would just hold all the dirt and water and crap in there and make it rust out again. Speaking of welding does anyone have traction bars on their truck that could show me a picture or give a good description on where to start?

You have to box it so that the crap cant get in there. I've seen a few done but dont have any pics. We watched a guy build a new one out of Tube steel for his truck and it was awesome.

Be careful while boxing. These frames are steel hardened....

I am just plating mine from the cab back. I bought 8 inch wide 3/16 steel for the webbing and 3/16 by 3 inch for the bottom rib and I am putting that from the cab all the way to the end of the truck. Then I will be painting with either POR 15 or Duraplate epoxy from Sherwin Williams. The epoxy is rated for salt water emersion.

The announcers always poke fun at my truck, until I get going. Then its holy smokes where did all that smoke come from.

Try here for traction bar ideas: http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1004. Lots of ideas, although none of them are on a 1st gen, the concepts still apply. I think Ace also did a write-up on building traction bars on here. His were considerably shorter than what they are building on Comp Diesel. Sled pullers seem to like to run the bars up underneath the cab.

Just found this thread: http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25168. Lots of good information on the theory of how traction bars work.
