Hitch

Postby mhuppertz » Sat Jan 06, 2007 4:27 pm

If I wanted to hook my truck to a sled  what kind of hitch would I need? I have a SEMI sized military pintle that I could weld up...

around here they say you need a 1" clevis. the thickness of the metal ring is supposed to be 1". however they are never very strict about it here.

Use at least a class IV receiver. Then you need a solid stock insert for the hitch. DO NOT USE HOLLOW HITCHES!!!! Especially if it is a drop/raise. If you arent going to do it alot and arent looking for any advantages then you can just use a large twisted clevis. Most sleds need a minimum of a 3" opening in the clevis for the hook to fit. The standard rules are you can be at 26" hitch height max. Unless you have suspension mods or hang front weights most 1gen's get the hops so it might be a good idea to run your hitch around the 18-20" range to avoid the hops. It is always cheaper and more fun to sacrifice some traction for a good smooth hook. :D

That is good advice. It's better to go out and make some smoke and put on a nice show, spin out at 180 feet, and drive home than to start hopping at 60 feet, break the truck, and have a Ford haul you home.

Now he tells us... They didn't care about hitch hieght in Houston... and Bucky was born.. haha... (We flipped the hitch over.. probably about 30-34in... Won't do that again... not with out blocks.. LOL... )

30-34" you all trying to pull a wheelie? Blocks wont help as much as a good set of traction bars to prevent axle wrap. The 6" blocks in the back comibined with the narrow springs cause the 1gens to do nasty things.

It has bars on it.. (attached to the bottom only) but wimpy springs... Wheelie.. No just trying to make up for the light weight of the 1st... Probably been OK with the 26in we had it set at before... Lesson learned...

If the geometry isnt just perfect and you arent blocked solid a single bar to the bottom can be worse than no bar at all about causing the hops as it actually gets bound up as the suspension compresses, then it unloads and does it again, with no bars and wimpy springs it just squats till the rear u-joint cant handle the angle anynmore and decides to take a vacation. On a side note unless you have welded up solid engine mounts I suggest you run a cable from your cylinder head to your frame rail on the driver side with maybe 1/4" of slack in it. The first gen mounts are weak in a hard pull. I know because I saw a turbo ripped off one when the engine flipped sideways in the engine compartment when it ripped the mounts in half!! :x

Back in the early 90's when we were pulling a 3/4 ton 1gen with the gas trucks and the 6.2's and 7.3's in the 6200lb class we had made solid steel mounts for it. When it was pull season they went in, when it wasnt they came out. They are TERRIBLY noisy, and are no doubt hard on the engine transmitting all that vibration and frame flex. I run the limiting cable now, it keeps me from ripping mounts apart and it isnt soo hard on the motor or my senses. :P

welcome: NEEDMOPOWER
In my drag cars i drill a 3/8 hole in the middle of mount and put 3/8 bolt with locking nut don't tighten nut stop at about 1/4" that way the mount cant break and it will bottom out on the bolt.

Also if you're going to start pulling on a regular basis, your Reese hitch will begin to bend in the middle!
