Diesel Modified-class Tractor Pullers

Postby Begle1 » Mon Feb 26, 2007 12:05 am

Not the Modified class of the DHRA pulls, but those full-custom monstrosities that the USAP runs with the 4 supercharged 528 hemi's.

I haven't been to any of the big boy pulls in a few years, but from what I recall they were all running either V-8's, V-12's or turbines. Why no Diesel?

Because the diesels have to low of a power to weight ratio. Say you ran a 505 SSD setup that makes about 2500hp if its right, or 27-2800 if you lean on it pretty good. Those engines with the 3 chargers will weigh about 2500lbs each so thats 5000lb. For the same weight you can run 4 2000hp blower hemis. So you can have 8000hp alky or at most 6000hp diesel, which would you choose?

Aren't the modified pullers limited to displacement and not weight?

Readily-available Diesel's have the lower power-to-weight, but I think we can edge the gassers out in power to displacement... Right?

Unlimited Modifieds are limited to 7500lbs, from there they can run any engine combination they want pretty much. The current modified champion runs 4 chevrolet based engines, and the former multi time champion whose tractor is no more ran 4 hemis at the end and prior to that ran 2 hemis and 2 chevys because the rules prohibited running 4 hemis. That was/is the grand national modified class, the unlimited mods were not that way, but run a VERY limited series. A guy from texas ran 1 dt466 IH diesel on alky with I think it was a hemi motor. He could only run those two engines because of the weight and It did decent but was not near the top of the class. Much like the old allisons and rolls royce motors they are cool but cant hang with the blower mountain motors.

All right, didn't know that they were weight limited. Going by weight would make it a lot more open ended.

Any bet until they will be competing? Based on the Audi R10, I think that ultra-modern Diesel's are rapidly approaching gassers in terms of power-to-weight. Although those supercharged Hemi guys have about 30 years of a headstart making them work right...

Nelson's Bullwhip had a Dt466 Ih on alky on it. No diesel fuel.

Yup.. that's the closest to a diesel machine I could think of for a US Mod.. Go to Youtube.. and watch some of the European Mods.. they have some diesel Mods.. not very many.. but a few...

I want to see the a clip of the Fire Dragon run... (Then they get it on the track.... )

remember guys those jet tractors are only running on high filtered kerosene......not that far from diesel......

jet tractors are the way to go, a motor only costs about 25k compared to bolting a new 575 blower motor together for 30-35K, with both motors set on kill, the blower motor will take about 10-15 runs (lucky to get 20) before the aluminum connecting rods work harden and they come apart, the jet motors will last almost indefinately......

Larry Roberts' DOUBLE STUFF unlimited tractor is running 2 alcohol drinking triple turbocharged DT466's and both his tractors ULTIMATE TOY and ULTIMATE TOY II run that class also but are running T-53 Lycomings......his other 2 tractors BIG TOY AND BIG TOY II (the alky tractors) both fit into the unlimited class though they are OPEN SS.....
