Build a Dodge GASSER pulling truck?

Postby bgilbert » Fri Jun 12, 2009 2:00 pm

What's it gonna take to build a decent running old (70's) model Dodge gasser pulling truck? It's all Chevy and Ford around here at the pulls. I know Michael Miller has a good running 440 Dodge puller. I'm looking for a good recipe to start with, ie 4.10 geared 3/4 ton truck etc. Oh and the needle in the haystack, at least for around here, a big block 70's Dodge truck...

What kinda class you thinkin you wanna run

Theres a couple good running old Mopar pullers around here

A buddy of mine pulls with an OD green 76 reg cab with a low compression 440 with a mild cam a 727 and a 208 and whips up on everything in the street class, He also knows how to read a track too

i'm not sure how much of this info might transfer over into puliing ,
but i have a '77 w100 ( short box ) i used to race in the local mug bogs ( 2 pits of mud , side by side , 200 feet long )
the set up was something like this 3.5 gears , 727 , 360 ( running around 400 hp ) , with a 34 inch tire .

just by going from a stock torque converter to a high stall one dropped me down just over 2 seconds to just a hair over 7 seconds .
the stock converter was stalling around 2200 rpm .
the new one was around 3400 rpm .

i'm thinkng that in a pulling aplication , a higher stall converter would give the driver more control over tire slipage one the track , and also the ability to climb right to the engines torque peak almost instantly
'93 w250 .... stock ...

It will take a NP435 and a NP205 transmission and transfer case, then a dana 80 or a 14bolt corporate or one like pulltillbroke has. Then you need to get the kits from Profab to build those 2 pieces into pulling application parts so they will live. You will want some 6.12 gears to take the load off the driveshafts transmission and t-case. Then take a 440 block and put a 400 crank in it then you can get close to I think it is a 500 or a 505 can't remember. Slap some indy heads on it, a Holley Domiantor carb and single plane intake and you should have a stout runner. Oh can't forget the MSD ignition! You can get a good dual disk slipper clutch from mccleod that should work fine.

I thought the 400 crank in a 440 got you in the 470ish range for cubes?

Most of the guys around here are runnin either a 14b or the HO72

This truck is runnin an 80 and a very healthy Big block( kinda obvious)

What are the chevies running? We need some info about what you are going to pull against. Is your street class real street trucks, or are they 500" race gas motors? Are you ready to spend a little coin?

Look up www.440source.com, build a stroker motor up to the max inch of the class rules and have some fun. I've got a 400 core, and a 440 block, a big block bell housing for a 4 speed, and a big block 727.

Autos with a stall are much more friendly getting them off the line, but need deeper gears to get the motor upstairs. 435/203 will live quite well, with a good twin disc. It would probably handle 600 hp pretty reliable.

The dana 60 rear will not handle even 400 hp hooked to a sled. Get a 14 bolt for free from a chevy guy for the rear end, a detroit locker, and upgrade the rear shaft to 1350 yokes and ujoints. The dana 44 front will live a while as long as you don't lock it, and don't have tons of front weight. A dana 60 front will live quite happily.

Why don't you come out here this summer, and run mine down the track a few times. I've got some different heads to try, intake and E85 carb. I've got a twin disc Mccloud, but haven't figured out how to mate it to my externally balanced engine without molesting the twin disc flywheel.

Careful Michael, I might want to bring my trailer with me and haul your puller home with me  . Seems like all the big block trucks are in Iowa from the last time I talked to you Michael. I haven't found any around here yet. Just pieces, small block truck here, pulling parts, blocks, bells over here etc. I'd rather not piece it together. I'm currently just looking for a 440 truck to play with and see if I really want to drop some coin into a puller. I sold my 318 extended cab 3/4 ton 75 Power Wagon this past April.

If I want to pull with an organization, the cube limit is 470ci, thats mostly street trucks.

So, are you looking for a big block truck with a 4 speed or an auto? If I found a 400 truck would you want it?

I'm not worried about you taking my truck back to Indiana. I know where Terra Haute is, and someday I'm going to Schied's, and I'll come collect a dually crew cab.

I'd look for 400 truck, then if you like pulling, you can get a crank and rods and pistons to run 470" from the link above for around $1800. Find some good ported iron heads and make the chevy boys mad.

not to mention, a 400 truck is gonna be cheaper than a 440. i might know where there is a 77 (i think) w100 lwb with a 400. the guy stole parts form me and i dont talk to him anymore, but i could check on it if you want.

Mopar made two different Big blocks(well not different just a different deck highth)

350,361,383,400, were the B Block and the 413,426, 426 hemi, and the 440 were the RB block
