looking for some input on a pull truck

Postby Franco424 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 5:07 pm

I have a 91 w250 reg cab longbed with a 727 and 3.07s that is just hanging out at the house now that I have my 06 to tow with. The plan was to use the 91 as a pull toy but I have some concerns about the 3.07 gears and the limited options for lockers or gears. anyone doing or done any pulling with 3.07s or do I need to swap? Id hate to get playing with the thing and then have to drop several thousand into new axles or exotic gear sets. figured someone might be using a 1st gen for pullin and have some input.
any thoughts on the ability of this setup for pullin? not trying to go out and win everything, just dont wana go out and barely move either.
Thanks for any help

If its just for pulling and your concerned about the ratio just change out the axles for a set with 4.10's. A 3 speed and 4.10's on the street would suck but if its a off road toy who cares. A couple of guys have the 727 and 3.07 that pull.

yea man i got myself the same truck mines non i/c, lincoln locker in the rear, 366 spring and pump cranked as far as shell go. ill be enterin my 3rd pull with the ol girl this friday :) 3.07's pull allright but if your 727 has seen as many miles as mine (440 and climbin ) i found that i had some major slippage issues about half way through 2nd (low range ) and came to a hault at the 229' mark ( 10' behind a slightly massaged p-pumped cummins 8) ) im also running 33x12.5's soo i think a set of smaller tires might help er wind throungh 2nd and cross that line this weekend, i also found the rear springs could need a few more leafs as she squats a little more that it should.

I would trade these axles with no problem if I had anyone around that wanted to. The closest thing to a decent axle I could nab for little to none is a closed nuckle 70 that I dont think I want.
Im going to plan on doing all the basics tranny rebuild and nice converter, injectors and turbo, turn up the pump and get a upgraded LP setup(not sure how what ill go with there). Ive got gauges sitting in the garage along with a few stock turbos and housings. Since it will be a toy only ill plan on a ladder bar style setup for the rear too to hopefully keep things in check wrap wise.
Sounds like it wont be too awful even if I am stuck with the 3.07s for a little bit so Ill plan on getn to tickering soon. Got my new garage finishing up so then I can finally be out from under the tree.
Is there such a thing as a cheap locker for the 3.07 dana 61 other then lincoln?

3:50 or 4:11

I would choose the 4:11 as you can run second gear and maybe even high gear in low range dependin on wether your usin a 32" or 35" tire

most 3/4 tons in my neck of the woods had 3:50's so a swap should be an easy find

My 3.07's pull okay. I would like some 4.11's but with teh non-OD 727 you RPM at crusing speed will be WAY up.

Yeah but clearly you have converter issues or a slipping trans or absolutely no tire. 3000rpm +3rd gear low side = 44mph wheel speed. It takes about 1200hp to get the sled to 30mph which usually takes about a 32mph wheel speed so you have some kind of issue there. 1st gear low side should be plenty of gear with 3.07's.

My speedo reads about 30ish, not quite tuning 3000rpm, but if I stay in 2nd it defuels, you can see the boost fall right off. I have yet to hook with a good bitting tire yet. I'm just running some Nitto Terra grapplers now, had some BFG A/T's but the dang input broke befroe I could hook it.

And I hope damn well my tranny aint slipping, got alot of time and $$$ in that thing.

A 46% loss in rpms seems a bit excessive to me. That sure isn't a very good fluid coupling that is for sure! Sounds like your convertor stall is too high and you are basicly running in stall all the time. I would think that would make for a lot of transmission heat turning that much lost energy has to go somewhere.
