2 things....

SHUT THE FRICKEN CAPS LOCK OFF!!!!

And why tug o war??? It will destroy everything between the torque converter/clutch to the wheels. Something is gotta give.

Since Jon covered the caps lock thing............ ;)

Sounds like the converter is heating up everything else. What are you running for a converter? Stock, or some kind of after market?
Oh, and it would help if we knew more about the truck, injectors, turbo, fuel pump been played with, etc.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

The only thing that will help is low low gears. 7.17's and a double 203 205 ultra low transfer case. You can't use lock up while doing your pulling so that won't help. I would also stay with the loose converter for more control of traction. Heat is the enemy but you need to control tire slip so your conv is going to get hot. Its just the way it is. Put in a bunch of coolers or even a ice box cooler. Look in to some oil to water coolers like what is used in marine trannys. Same thing as the stock cooler under the turbo but can be much bigger.

I wouldn't want to stay with a loose converter it is just going to build more heat. I agree with the oil to ice box kind of cooler. I have two 25k rated coolers on my truck along with the exchanger on the motor and even after a sled pull the tranny temp is still low.

First, these trucks (1st gens) aren't really suited for what you are trying to do (VERY LIGHT), but they can be made competitive.

What class are you pulling in? Many classes will eat up any factory issued automatic, no matter how well it's built. You can built a strong auto with the right parts, but it ain't going to help if you're hooked to a rig with a Pro-Fab reverser, SCS, and Rockwells. Check out some Jesse Black's trucks...in the tug o' war game, these are the best in the world. Some guys weigh in at over 30,000 lbs with 2 VHT'd slicks at each corner. Check out some of the street trucks, and build something along those lines.

With that in mind, a non-lockup isn't not necessarily a bad thing in the world of hookin'. With the right gearing and tire setup, your converter should slip before your tires spin. You just have to make sure you have enough grab in your converter to drag the other truck through his brakes, if you've got the traction to do it.

Then, like others have said, you only have to deal with heat. My cooling setup is as follows (beware: you need a LOT of trans line to run this setup) Fluid runs from trans into Derale cooler with fan, from there to an inline pump that pushes it through 2 massive Hayden coolers mounted in a toolbox that is filled with ice, then back to the trans. My temp never gets over 185 degrees.
