727 swap

Postby centex 1stgen » Sat Jul 24, 2010 10:08 am

i have a 92 that the guy that owned it before me pulled the origonal motor and trans out and put a non intercooled motor and 727 in it. well i want to put a 518 back in it so i can go over 60 mph. i need to know what all i will need beside the trans and how hard it will be to do the swap. the trans harness is still there and pluged into the 727. and any other advice about the truck with the different motor and truck would be bad ass. thanks ty

For the most part it's a bolt in, may be driveshaft length issues. Are we talking 2x or 4x?

Drive shaft and trans crossmember. Depending on the year of the cab, you may need to "adjust" the shape of the trans tunnel.

I believe you will have to wire up a switch to turn overdrive on and off.

It's a 92, it had a 518 to start with, the main question is 2x or 4x4, if it's 2 wheel drive definite driveshaft work is needed.

Yes it's a 2wd but I need to know how long the drive shaft needs to be shortened

True that it should have had the stuff to wire the overdrive but he said it has a non intercooled motor in it, which means that it doesn't have a tps on it.

Or, probably, the correct wiring harnesses for engine/trans.
Fortunately, I have the TPS w/bracket and a '92-'93 2wd automatic engine/trans harness.

On second thought, does this truck CHARGE the battery?
'92-'93 relies on the PCM and a crank sensor to do so.
If the crank sensor is on the engine, then they probably didn't hack the wiring up.

Technically, you can't just plug in the early engine bay harness, there's enough of a difference that things won't work properly.
There's a whole lot more to all this than simply installing the proper tranny back in, you also probably need to fix the things they changed to do so.

centex 1stgen, you need to look closer and see just how butchered up the wiring really is.
