I quick google search came up with this. You should probably ask another forum.

Unless your talking about the 46rh. A 2nd gen forum would give you a better answer for a 47rh.

I think people here know as much about the 47RH as the 46RH, they are very similar transmissions.

CompD isn't noted for it's friendly atmosphere.
They seem to really like to screw with "newbies" asking what would seem to be practical learning questions.
Whatever you do, don't mention that you're under 25 on there, that really seems to wad them up.

There has been allot of useless stuff over there as well. I agree with Mark though they are hard on newbs over there anymore.

Being one of the last private owned places on the internet, I can understand their loftiness. They don't want to be the next CF and DTR...

Otherwise...

Plenty of people here know about the 47RH.

For upgrades, I would do the Kolene Steels and Alto Red clutches, a nice single disk converter, maybe an input shaft, and a modified valvebody.

The 47RH is almost exactly like the 46RH/A518. All it does is add a lock-up (with associated parts) and an extra wire for the solenoid.

If it were me and I had a budget to stick to this is what I'd build.
1Specrite converter
2Transgo TFOD shift kit
3Raybestos high energy clutching w/good old steels(they'll work just fine)
4kevlar front band / stock style rear.
5 BIG A55 trans cooler
If your running over....say 250 to 300Hp, you may think of 5 pinion planets.
This is all I have put in the ones I've personaly built for my customers. These are in working trucks that see lots of pulling time. There is one other thing that I have done, I remove the converter anti drain back check valve in the cooler lines. These things can(well) hamper fluid flow and well burn up the trans. The shift kit above well allow fluid to be pumped thru the converter and cooler/ lines. So really there is not as much need for it. There WELL be a slight delay in gear engagement, when the truck has set for a long time, when shifting from park.
Again this would depend on the power level/ money you'd like to spend. ;)

I just posted a link to someone who had already asked the question. Not to a specific forum.

47rh may be similar, but they came in 2nd gen trucks only so that's why i suggested it.

I'm sorry if you feel I was busting on you, man, I apologize. :(

While I understand the thinking, we on 1stgen, like many other people, are into other things besides 1stgen stuff, so this forum, like many others, has people who are knowledgeable in a wide variety of different things.

I, for example, used to be heavy into old Mopars and about anything Dodge Magnum engine related.
In the past, I put a '93 5.9 Magnum into a '68 Dart by stripping down a van harness to the bare essentials for engine management.
It had the OEM fuel injection, not some BS 4 barrel conversion on a modern engine, and it ran awesome.

RichieO seems to have a fetish for GM stuff.
So does Pulltilbroke. :?
Ellis93 is a general mechanic, who works on any number of neat (and not so neat) things. ;)
Ptoombs is a, well, I'm not quite sure what Pete is, a mechanic of some sort, I'm sure. :D

So, just because it's not 1stgen related, doesn't necessarily mean that it's taboo.
Though it might take some time to get the right answers, someone here is bound to know something about it.

If I were an automatic person, I'd ditch the 518 like a hot potato and run a 47RH.
The lock-up feature really helps the Cummins work to it's potential, but even then, you gotta' put good parts in it for it to last against the unrelenting torque.

Realistically you'd better not set a budget then. If that's the hp rang your shooting for. Least IMHO.
I know of a few VP44 truck running that have had the same build as described, less the converter. The one I built a year ago,I made him buy his own converter and I don't remember the brand. All I remember is it was orange. The Trucks trans has lasted this long so maybe it could work for you.
I do know that people snap either of the three shafts. And a few have at lower hp than your shooting for. I truly believe its a roll of the dice.

Attention Mr Mark
Your just jealous you don't work on kia's and toyota's.
I'm not sure how to take being grouped with Mr toombs

Pete is a red tractor mechanic. Same thing as a green tractor mechanic but not paid as well as the owners of said red tractors don't feel the need to pay top dollar for everything....

There are worse people to be associated with than Pete, believe me.

As far as Ki-asses and Toy-yo-yos, if I had a shop, I guarantee you, given people actually have the cash they offer, I could work on only what I want to take in.
It's hard to commit to something like that, because you just don't know what is BS and if the people actually have the money to do what they say they want to do.

I know you can directly relate to that, Ellis.
