A518 Tail

Postby jogl » Mon Sep 10, 2007 6:17 pm

The rear end of the transmission (the flange where it bolts on to the transfer case) is broken on my wreck. I would like to fix it.

What all had 518's in them that I could get a tranny or just the tail piece out of?

My wreck is a '93 W250.

Thanks,
JP.

Good thing you mentioned it is a *W*250, as the 4x4 and 4x2 had different tail housings. I'm not sure on what will fit. Check ebay for used parts. I have yet to see one listed, but I'm sure someone around here knows where one can be had.

You do have a 4x4 right :? (just for my verification)? I have been looking for a 4x4 Overdrive housing for my poject, cause i have 2 2wd tail housing, not sure what else would use this tranny maybe the Ramcharger, would however i have been talking to a guy at roadmastertranz.com and this is what he emailed me "
"Switching the internals is a nice idea but will not work as the 4X4 and the 2WD housings are different length because of the output shaft.

The 47RH 4X4 housing remanufactured would be $450.00 plus shipping
"

He might be able to get you a housing and you just change your internals??
hope this helps

You can take a 2wd od section and swap it with a 4x4 od section and it works just fine.

I did it to my RH out of a 95

You can find any 518/47RH (the RH was out of 94-95 model year cummins rams)

The V-10 auto tranny is also an option. The governer weights in the OD section have to be replaced with the diesel RH versions.....

I don't think so. His housing is broken where the transfer case bolts on.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I was answering wingnuts question on swapping 2wd OD housing and 4wd OD housings.

And if you find a 4x4 housing out of the above trannies... they WILL unbolt from the main case and are easily swapped with another from a donor truck.

On edit... I read the above post wrong.

You can swap OD housings and make a 2wd a 4wd tranny.

The OD housings from the RH series will work on the 518 just fine. The 2wd being the same on the rh as the 518 and 4wd being the same.

So... the OD housings are interchangeable, just have to be transfer case specific.

Clear now?

Anyhow.... I think this makes it a little clearer in my mind.

Thanks all
Mark

It is a 4x4 W250.

So, I should be looking at 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton and 1 ton Dodge pick ups with 4x4 and obviously 518's. What years would those be, just '90 to '93?

Oh yeah, and Ramchargers.

Anything else?

Yes, the flange on the rear of the OD section (that is what it is called, right?) is cracked off. Hopefully everything else is OK but I haven't taken it apart yet.

Thanks,
JP.

You should look for any 3/4 and 1 ton Dodge trucks from 91.5 to 95 with a diesel or a V10 engine in them. Like someone else mentioned, the V10 gov. weights are different, but its otherwise the same.

I am not sure the V8 gas cases are the same or not. They could be, I'm not sure.
