The simple answer: Alot. RE's are electronic and require alot of wiring to work right. I suppose it is possible to make it work, but I'm sure swapping in a 47RH would be easier and cheaper

You'll need some kind of controler to make it work.

You could use it as parts for your 518. Lots of info on using the planets and such to beef up the 518.

Or a manual valvebody. No electronic required except for OD and lockup.

Just some wiring and switches is all you need.

A 47RE is not the best way to go. I haven't driven a 518 truck to compare, but going from a 727 to a 47RH was a huge step up. You'd have to do alot less fabrication to go from a 518 to a 47RH/RE than I had to do. The block plate is 1" thicker and that's the only difference dimension wise. If you plan on pulling, racing, or pounding the street, lock-up is more fun and is the way to go. But locking up is when stuff breaks.

I had a 47RH (found in '94 and '95 trucks) and it has only one more wire than your 518. The 47RH has 3 wires (O/D ground, hot, and lock-up ground) and a 47RE ('96-'02?) is completely electronic from what I understand. No TV cable or anything. It determines line pressure, what gear to be in, and such by way of a computer. I suppose a manual valvebody would work to control a 47RE, but I have to imagine it would be cheaper and easier to go with a 47RH. I controlled O/D and lock-up with switches and 1-2-3 require no electricity in a 47RH. 1-2-3 happen by themselves in a 47RH (like your 518), assuming you are in D and not 2 or 1

For the 47RH, yes. And you'll need the 3-pin connector that incorporates that 3rd wire. It's like $20 from PATC.

But you have me confused because this thread is titled 47RE swap.
