Putting a Getrag in my 93 Auto? Anyone done it? Pointers?

Postby sxd217 » Fri Oct 05, 2007 8:58 am

I am looking at putting a Getrag from a 91 w350 in my 93 w250 that currently has an automatic in it. Has anyone done it? Any advice?

I helped my buddy swap out his tf727 in his '92 CTD to a Getrag. What do you need to know? He bought a wrecked 1st gen with the Getrag and swapped the trans and t-case. I think he had to have a front drive shaft lengthened and the rear shortened. It was not a fun project. If you are going to go to all that trouble I would put a good clutch and a NV4500 in it. He had to get his Getrag rebuilt 5 months after the swap, go figure.

By the time you buy all the parts and do all the work you could have a pretty beefy auto built, just a thought.

If you have a donor truck it really shouldn't be too bad. It is much easier to find clean auto 4x4 than 5 speeds and they are always much cheaper too. I'd rather change a transmission and put new pedals, etc in than swap body parts, etc.

My 92 was auto, the 93 parts truck that I got for the engine was Getrag. I wanted the 5 speed and do not regret the change. (and yes, I have had to rebuild the Getrag, but I still like it. I suspect that if I had opened it up, inspected it and checked preloads I would not have had the issues I did.)

One issue that I ran into other than the driveshafts being different lengths, was that the yoke on the 92 auto truck was smaller than the yoke off the 93 5 speed so when I grabbed the parts truck driveshaft, I had to install a conversion u-joint to fit the auto's front yoke.

Not a trivial swap, but I think it was good for me as I already had the parts truck.

One cool thing you can do if you do this swap is use the tranny fluid cooler for your Power Steering. :)

I just ran across the front driveshaft difference myself. 93's and some late 92's have bigger yokes and front u joints.
