Conversion help.

Postby oldestof11 » Sun Oct 07, 2007 1:47 pm

I am really considering putting the Cummins I have into the Suburban I am driving. (Do not own yet but hopefully soon! Waiting on Dad....) I am wanting to keep the original tranny (700R4 OD).

Now I have talked to Philip at SOP. He said it will hold the Cummins, just need some upgrades.

Now here is what I found.

I had another link but accidently hit Cut instead of Copy when I right click to copy out of bookmarks..... :x

Now do I buy a HD/Stage 3/Extreme model new and get a different TQ converter? One of these pages offer a converter for diesels and low rpm applications. OR.....

Do I rebuild/find someone to rebuild the tranny? I am not afraid of anything but just that my wallet might not like me losing pieces.

I am looking for a cheap(er) alternative to making this happen with less modding required than putting a 518/47RH in it.

Thanks for the help!

I have done a cummins to chevy trans hookup. It is pretty simple, I have the complete adapter you will need for the 700r4. I can not say if it will take the cummins or not, but I can say I was unhappy with the performance of my 4l80e and it was mostly due to the factory 6.5 electronics and the torque converter. I went with a nv4500

I also have a 91 surburban for sale

That is why I want to go the 700R4 route, the lack of electronics need to run it. I did research and it can be made to be a fully automatic without electronics and also they have manual valvebody's for them so I can get the drag time of a auto but still get that feeling of shifting like a manual.

you can also convert a GM 4l80e to full manual, for about 250.00 then all you need is a shifter and a good converter. The internals of the 4l80e are much bigger and it may be cheaper to start with one vs. spending alot of money upgrading the 700r4, either way you will have to buy a good converter for performance. I know Suncoast makes a converter for the 4l80e but it is around 1400.00 and with the full manual conversion you still have overdrive but you loose lockup

So what would be better, controlling shifts or lock-up?

I am just asking before diving head first. I do a lot of research so I do not run into too many snags.

Torque converter lock up can be obtained with the transgo full manual kit for the 4l80e, but the kit does not provide for it in the instructions. To make it work a resistor must be wired into the the PWM solenoid from the power supply. Without a resistor, its life will be shortened. Then it can easily be turned on off from the ground side as the stock PCM does on a switch. You can then wire it into your brake switch or some type of boost switch so it locks at a given level of boost, with a master on/off switch.

I am unaware if it will work with a 700r4, but if I had to guess I bet there is a way.
