Getrag fluid change

Postby hydroshok » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:38 pm

I was reading in my owners manual and it says never to change the fluid. I know that must be wrong so what do you guys recommend for changing the fluid?

The manual also says to use ATF is that correct or should I upgrade?

i'll probly try for every 30k, we'll see though. can't hurt to change it more often, but it doesn't need it every 5 or 10k

I change it 2 or 3 times a year. The way I figure it must be about every 1000 miles. It sucks to have tranny issues.
On a good note, I've found you really only need about 6 bolts to hold it in there.

I'd change it every month or few weeks if I did every thousand. I like 30k. It's better than never changing it like the book says. It is weird because if you don't use the right fluid in the NV4500; the syncros start to go, but you can do whatever you want with the getrag....

Every 30k miles and fill through the shifter.
Mobil 1 5w-30 Extended Performance. It's available everywhere, comes in 5 qt containers (perfect size), and goes on sale regularly.
If you want to monitor your oil so you know if you actually NEED to change it, consider getting on an oil sampling program with Blackstone Labs. I do engine and trans with them and they maintain records online.
Another great upgrade that will probably be cheaper than changing the fluid every 1k miles is add a filter like this one: http://www.quad4x4.com/filterkits.html
They bolt on in place of you PTO cover plate and have a magnetic and particulate filter. Great way to monitor trans wear and add a little capacity! I run a cooler on driver's side and filter on passenger side.
