A518 Dipstick tube seal?

Postby slow_90firebird » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:06 pm

Ok guys finally got the tranny back in yesterday night with new flex plate, converter, seal, and rear main. We spent 4hrs and 3 gallons of fluid trying to get the dipstick tube to stop leaking. The old o-ring was shot and we tried a few different universal ones from a napa assortment and I even went out and bought a fat one that fit on the tube, but couldn't get it in! Finally found one that was loose on the tube but seated in all the way. I drove it all last night and today and degreased it at the car wash. It was bone dry until tonight and now it puked out in my driveway...

So what is your guys experience with this? The tube seems ok no cracks and the hole in the tranny seems clean...

I'm sorry, I don't have experience with this. I did some searching and so far the good news is your not the only one this happened to  . Here is a link I found. What I got out of reading it was that everything must be meticulously clean and aligned. Did your tube or brackets take any hits during your teardown/install? And, double check if I wrong, but the guy in this post installed tube first, then checked to see if it was going into bore all the way and it was'nt so he had to adjust the bracket. Some use rtv also, some don't. I don't know about a universal o ring  . I did see one that fits our trucks at ORielly.

I've been down this road before. RTV won't do anything, I tried to make it work and just made a mess. It almost sounds like the tube isn't seated all the way and rattles loose if it truly pukes alot of fluid. I put a 1/2" drive socket extension in the tube and hammered mine in. You can feel it pop into place

Cool guys thanks for the help! Earth dad I actually found a link from a link from one of yours that gave me the oem part number for the o ring. Gotta try the dealer... We don't have any oriellys around here at all.

I was thinking try the proper o ring, drop the pan to make sure it's super clean with brake clean, and run a bead of rtv around top after its in, and let it cure before refilling?

Should I use the extension and hammer with or without it bolted to bell housing?

If you could wait, you could send me your old o-ring, i've got 3-4 seal kits for these trans and I don't usually replace the oring so i should have 2 of them. or i could dig through them and see what i have that looks like it, I can't remember if they put the dipstick orings in a seperate package or not. I know it came with a rubber insert and an oring. I'll try to look tonight.

In general on dipstick tubes it never hurts to get the o-ring wet with atf and then rock and twist gently when installing. Make sure you really give it a solid push near the end of its trip so it goes in all the way and properly.
