Random Ticking

Postby longscore » Wed Oct 31, 2012 1:16 pm

Guys,i have a 92 w250 ,205 transfer case,518,etc,with approx.300k miles.I rercently started getting a random ticking noise, intermittent actually, and its getting progressively worse. It sounds like its coming from the transfer case,in and out of gear, but seems to diminish a bunch when i put it 4x4.All the fluids are good. What gives?Could it be the tranny? It sounds like metal on metal, like tapping 2 wrenches together while holding them tight.Thats the best way i can describe it.like tick....tickticktick...........ticktick..tick.Totally weird

Could be that you lost a hub spring.

are you sure it is coming out of the t-case or tranny area?

Just wondering if it isn't a thrust bearing failure... these are common and I have heard you can hear a difference when putting in and out of gear.

A cracked transmission flex-plate will transmit noise all over the place.

Im pretty sure its coming from the t-case.But i never thought of the flex plate.I think ima have to look at that. The tranny is tired anyway,i might be pulling it pretty soon if i dont sell it first.
