Auto tranny upgrades

Postby gomerpile » Sat Oct 20, 2007 4:48 am

alright i want some opinions on the hughes tc rebuild, im thinking the xfm, IIRC, its a triple disk and what can i get the stall set at? is there any better places for similiar money ($400). and the next one is the trans go shift kit, is it worth it? ($60) will it firm up shifts?

will i need a tranny cooler under the bed for towing or will this control the heat well?
lastly will this support 350+hp?

The trans go kit will firm up the shifts.

On the converter. I do not see anything in you sig that says you have a 47rh/618 transmission installed. If you have the stock trans it is a 518. This is not a lockup converter transmission.

i'm no expert on auto's by any means but i thought the 3 disc-5 disc thing is for lock-up trans. if you still have the stock 518 you dont have lockup so the disc thing does not apply. as for the stall, get as tight as you can without bogging the truck in high gear at low rpms. talk to the guys at hughes or any other convertor shop and they'll help you get what you need.

even the cheapest shift kit will improve shift quality, and as violent as it seems the harder the shifter the longer the trans will survive. it eliminates or reduces the slipping between gears which adds wear to the clutches. most just make valve body changes that affect fluid pressure and timing to the internal components. go for it

That section you posted is for a transmission used in a 94 and up. In 94 Dodge went to the 47RH/618 trans. It is a lockup converter trans. Your 92 does not have the same trans. It is a 46RH/518. This is a non lockup converter.

Houghs has both trans listed on the same line on their site. But they shouldn't be.

Installing a lockup converter would do nothing for you. You do not have the hyd circuits to make it work in your trans.

Further, it plain won't fit as the '94 and up use a thicker engine/transmission adapter plate so as to accommodate the thicker converter (there's almost an inch difference).

Here's a thread where I recently overhauled/upgraded my heaps A518 like you have. In my application, I was trying to eliminate any slip from added power, and to fix a number of the well known "Internal Leaks" associated with the 727 series transmissions.

Hope this helps. :)

I should have remembered it myself. I have a 47RH setting in the garage waiting for a rebuild. :D
